MAESTRO 1.3HLE
The 60mpg miracle.

This highly specialised Maestro makes use of sophisticated computer technology and electronics to attain miraculous fuel economy with no loss of driving pleasure. Lavishly equipped, it is a willing performer, with a top speed of 95 mph.

The HLE is recognisable by its aerodynamic rear spoilers and stylish wheels. The Maestro's wealth of standard equipment is there too, including homofocal halogen headlamps and 'white lamp' indicators, colour-matched bumpers, superb heating and ventilation, sidem window de-misting, heated rear screen with wash/wipe, asymetrically split folding rear seat and a central console with pushbutton radio.

In addition, the Maestro HLE introduces the comfort woven tweed upholstery (colour coded, of course), internally adjustable driver's door mirror, a digital clock and an electronic Economy Gauge. No mere gimmick, this precision instrument presents an active display of coloured indicator lights to help you maintain an economical driving technique.

The Maestro HLE is powered by Austin Rover's well-proved 1275cc A+ engine, extensively developed and - exclusive to the HLE - fitted with a special camshaft in the interests of fuel economy. Other fuel-saving features include low rolling-resistance tyres, electronic ignition and the Maestro's unique electronic engine management system. This microprocessor-based package includes an automatic electronic choke which reduces cold-start fuel wastage and electronic engine idling speed control which allows the engine to tick over at lower revs but guards agaist engine stall by increasing the throttle opening if, for instance, a sudden electrical load is sensed, and a deceleration fuel shut-off device. The latter two units can reduce fuel consumption by 3% and 5% respectively during traffic driving.

And that's not all. The HLE is equipped with a specialised version of the Maestro's VW gearbox. Known as "3+E", it provides three well-spaced gears for town driving plus an overdrive "E" top gear for economical cruising (60.5 mpg at steady 56 mph).
