Photograph Your Car

The nature of our photographic archive requires that images are of a high standard wherever possible. This page contains a few very basic tips that you might find helpful when submitting photographs of your car to the archive, or in general.

  • Equipment: Most modern digital cameras are capable of producing good clear pictures, but steer clear of mobile phone cameras. Phones are for making calls, not taking photographs! Ideally you will want at least 2 megapixels and above, and if you can stretch to a digital SLR and a 50mm and 300mm lens all the better.

  • Preparation: The car needs to be clean, and that includes the interior. Remove any clutter in view, parking tickets on the windows etc. Choose your angle carefully to hide any dents or rust patches.

  • Location: Avoid your driveway or a cluttered location with other cars and people. They're distracting and draw the eye away from the subject. Try to be a bit creative here. The countryside, a modern office building, a viaduct, the driveway of a stately home, a contrasting colour... all things that could potentially lend a great backdrop for a photograph.

  • Composition: Don't cut off bits of the car or frame it too tightly unless it enhances the photograph. Pay attention to what sneaks into the background as you prepare to take the photo. You could try a low angle or tilting the camera.

  • Light: Unless you are experienced and have the equipment to do so trying to shoot in low light conditions can be disasterous. Avoid strong direct sunlight, too. Early morning and late afternoon as the sun rises or sets often give the best results.

  • Interiors: Interiors can be difficult to get right because there are a lot of details and if you're using flash, a lot of potential for nasty shadows and reflections!

  • Take pictures at the largest size, resolution and compression your camera will allow.

  • Hi-res JPEGs should be resized to at least 1024x768 and sharpened a little.

Image on the left is too closely cropped and has a cluttered background. The image on the right works much better. The colours provide a strong contrast and the lines of the building draw the eye back to the car.
