Winter yet?!!?

I have a big problem.
My Austin Maestro2.0Efi which I`ve modified to 2.0TDiesel increased its weight so the brakes won`t do their job (especially on ice). I thought that if I`ll buy some 175/80/14 (winter profile) instead of 195/80/14 tyres I`ll solve the problem.
So I want to ask first: Do you think this is good thing to do?
How else should I brake faster. Can I replace the rear braking system to disks? If so what else I must change?

I`m a little confused and dunno what to do.
Please answer.
Thank you!

One of the downsides to the Maestro was that it was never fitted with ABS, and any brakes without do pretty much nothing on ice anyway, a good set of winter tyres and some drilled/groved discs and decent pads is about the best you can do at the front, not sure about the rear discs though.

As it was an EFi it'll have the best brakes a maestro was issued with, (TD's had worse brakes I beleive)

There is a mod to chage them for Golf brakes which are supposed to be better. Don't know the details though.
