  • How to re-cover a seat

As the drivers seat in my Turbo is showing its age I recovered the base and seat back. This is what you do from start to finish.
Starting at the front. Push the seat right back and remove the front 2 bolts. Then push the seat forward to memove the rear bolts. Retain the washers

Put the seat onto a sturdy platform.
Remove the headrest by pressing the sides of the retaining tubes
Pull off the seat reclining knob and remove the screw and side covers from both sides
Remove the 2 bolts either side

Turn the base over and remove the sides of the base cover
Turn over and remove the front and rear clips each side from the mesh surround
Remove the four wire clips (two each side) from the centre of the mesh surround and retain
        Remove the long flat

          Old wornout base
          Mesh and surround
          Replacement base
Replacement base back on with cover
          Much better
To put back together is the reverse of stripping it down. Remember to line up the holes on the cover

Turn over and remove the two long wire clips
Push the cover up to the next point which is the top of the long wire clips
Turn over and remove the clips by twisting and pushing noting the position on the mesh
              Remove the long flat

Slide the cover up and over the top
You will now need to remove the two headrest tubes. (second pic) You may find it easy but this it what I had to do
Remove the springs from the mesh and surround and retain. The front and back remove easily but the middle spring is tensioned. If you dont have a hook use a screwdiver
Remove the two clips and retain. Ease of the foam from the surround
You can now separate the foam/mesh enough to get a screwdriver on the tube retaining parts.
                Squash them inwards

                  And push out
                  Old seat foam
The two headrest tubes. Note the retaining parts that need to be opened out. Also note the channel as the tubes need to be put back correctly. There is a dot on the top of each and this needs to be facing forward.
To recover is the reversal starting with the mesh
Note that the two headrest clips can be put back last.
Remember to line up all holes
                  Seat back together.
The whole job only took an hour so isnt hard

I was going to put these on but they are from a Maestro and don't have the back pocket. They look brand new with no tears and with a bright red stripe and MG logo and include the bases. I also have the rear seat covers available. Does anyone want to make a sensible offer for the set?
