    Maestro spotting in the Hebrides

I've just returned from a holiday in the Outer Hebridean Isles (Scotland) -where I saw literally tens of maestro vans, and several maestros! Most of the Maestro vans appeared to be ex BT or British Gas? Definitely a van fan's paradise!

        Montego Spotting

How about this one then? Spotted today at Newbank Garden Centre in Bury. Must be quite rare, especially with those lovely 'dish' alloys. The owner didn't turn up while I was drooling over the slightly faded paintwork, so I left a flyer for the club under his wiper.

Just got back from a holiday in Malta - it's like Britain was 15 years ago, except with more classics.

Escorts Mk 1 and 2's galore, Anglias, Hillman Hunters to name but a few. And the Vauxhalls are Vauxhalls and not Europeanised Opels. Even the buses are all 1950's to 1980's style mostly.

I saw not one but two Maestros - both diesels (they like diesels in Malta). A good place to holiday if you like to spot mint (and some not so mint) classics.

I just thought on Malta buses slightly off topic. They do have some new buses, and the complany that makes some them is BMC, as in the British Motor Corporation. I don't know if you knew that. They are based in Turkey and they are what remains of the company, they even makes buses for here too. But thats where are old Leyland Leopard and Tiger buses end up though, in Malta.

But as for Maestro vans, I've seen a few. One that knocks around here is an L-reg on in white. There's one that occasionly knocks around in Ripon in "Telecom yellow" but is a late model M-plater. I've seen a couple of ex-Telecom in the horrid '92 grey, some with the ugly piper emblem shining where it covered the paint, I remember seeing one ex-Telecom G-reg with grey paint peeling off, and the yellow showing. But BT didn't paint the vans in '92 right when the piper was adopted, bring back the old 'T' I say! I've seen another Maester van, it was F-reg in Blue but it had crome handles, I think it was an ex-British Gas one. But I don't think there was Vanden Plas or Mayfair vans.

As in my other post I reported I saw an L-reg Monty saloon DLX, in Targa red, in Ripon. Somewhere in harrogate on my driving lessons I saw a white m-reg Monty Countryman estate. I also remember on another driving lesson, there was an L-reg Monty Diesel estate in either metallic blue or green.
Another odball was in patley a few months, yes another L-reg Estate, it was in metallic blue, but instead of saying MONTEGO at the back someone respectively added ROVER. The were also two F-reg MG Maesty's both in Targa red, and still as shiny as ever, not even a patch of pink.

Come to think of it a place where I live (Pateley Bridge), when you think all the cars are new, becuase many posh(?) people live here. You won't expect to see many Monty's or Maesty's around. But you actually do. there even used to some on our estate 7 years ago, as some photos of our estate show just that!

Apparantly New Zealand is similar - lots of 60/70s British and Aussie classics running around - Cortinas, Escorts, Avengers etc. - often built as kits in the home countries and assembled in NZ to get round import tariffs.

Don't know if AR sold cars there in the 80's - MG Rover have recently gone back in.

Never knew Monty's were in Japan! Sorry if this sounds dense, but when were they sold in Japan? I know the Metro and Rover 100 was sold there. But then having having Monty's there wouldn't surprise me, after all Austin/Rover had the relation with Honda. I wonder if they would still be in Japan, when I eventually go on holiday there!

No but their equivalent of the MOT is very, very strict. The first one is at three years, then another at five years, then another at seven. At either the five or seven year one, all brake components have to be replaced!

so by the seven year one, most cars are worth less than the repairs needed. However most cars are exported rather than scrapped - the boring Sunnys and Corrollas to Africa/Asia, things like Lexus, Skylines and 4wd to other RHD countries - mainly UK, Aus and NZ. Also Russia and other former USSR states as they don't care about RHD/LHD, they take what they can get after driving Ladas for 30 years!

I read in this weeks Commercial Motor that a lot of UK-registered lorries go to Russia as well, when they are about 6-7 years old, because they are maintained so well compared to other countries' ones, and are dirt cheap due to depreciation.

                            I've been spotted!

I've just had a knock at my door, from a chap who wanted to know if my MG 2.0i was for sale. My flyer in the window must have gave that impression.

Very enthusiastic about the cars, believe he owns an MG 2.0i also. Got a deal on a new front n/s door glass too as mine is not the correct tint level!

So as for Maestro & Montego spotting, my cars are being spotted now!

                              Montego with Rover grill

Spotted a foreign grey Montego yesterday with a Rover 200 grill on it on the A1/A14 junction. Unfortunately didn't have camera with me. Looked different, more like a Rover 800 with that on.

That is just the sort of nonsense grey importers spout to try to sell all those Imprezas. Grey imports are cheaper because they were cheaper when they were new and they are more plentiful there than in the UK.

The MOT equivalent is tougher but cars don't get routinely scrapped. I am sure even in Japan it much cheaper to replace the brake components than buy a brand new car. There are also lots of British classics in Japan such as MG1100s and Minis which haven't been scrapped.
