    £475 ono

This is an opportunity to own an early MG maestro Efi, this in my opinion is the best model of the Maestro range. (no engine problems of the MG 1600, and and the red interior)

I am selling this car to make way for another Maestro to add to my collection, I currently have 5 (yes, really), so need to sell one on, with the MOT expiring on this one, and it needing bodywork that i am never likely to do, I have decided this was the one to sell
I wish I could keep it, but i just dont have the room. I have no intention on putting it through an MOT for that reason, i just need the space

I believe this car to have been well looked after, although the service stamps stop in 2002 (81,704) miles, this is because there was physically no room left in the book, the invoices for all the stamped services were not passed on to me, but i would imagine that if any services were done since then, there would be with all that paperwork. however, due to this, the last record of the cambelt being changed is at 62820 miles, 11 years ago.

I welcome people to come and view, it is currently stored off the road in a garage due to MOT expired, however it does stop/go as i only parked it up a week ago. i also did a 200 mile journey in it 3 weeks ago with no problems.
    -----------------------------
    Make: MG
    Model: Maestro Efi
    Engine Size: 2.0
    Year:1987
    Mileage:93,000
MOT Expiry: March 16th 2011 (EXPIRED)
    Taxed until: 31/05/2011
    Paint Code: MME (Silver Leaf)
    Trim Code: LCH
    Previous Owners: 4

Power Steering, Electric Windows, Oil Pressure Gauge, Front Fogs.

    Engine

The Efi engine is a beautiful engine, as it is fuel injected, she started first time, every time, over the rubbish winter we had. unlike many other cars of this age with carbs.
This car has a lot of service history and I think the engine is a testament to that, at 90,000 miles, it still pulls strong, I did a 150 mile journey in it 2 weeks ago, and it never missed a beat
The Cooling fan does not kick in until it reaches the 3/4 mark on the temperature guage, im not sure if this is standard, but i have replaced the thermostatic switch that controls this with a new one and it is still the same.
The oil light came on about 6 months ago, after ascertaining there was nothing wrong with the oil system itself, it became apparent there was an earth somewhere on that circuit.so i removed the bulb and fitted an oil pressure gauge (see picture)

115bhp and the capability for 115mph and 0-60 in just 8.5 seconds (when new!)
a whole second faster at 0-60 than a golf GTi of the same age

    Bodywork

The Bodywork is this cars weak point. I have taken photos of the affected areas and rust spots, but the roof is the worst, It appears to have delaminated, and has turned to a rough sandpaper like surface.
also, a small amount of water can leak through the guttering near the front in sustained rain, I have temporarily cured this with some putty, but you will need to take the rubber strip out and seal with silicon for a permanent fix.

    Drivetrain

She is a pleasure to drive, the gearbox in these really were the best fitted to the Maestro, firm gearchange and no clunks, rattles or other untoward noises.
She has a slight tendency to veer to the left, it could be the tracking.
Power Steering is fitted to this model, the system functions well, with no sqeaking.

    Wheels

Included in the sale are the 5 spoke MGF alloys pictured, i think it may need 2 new tyres for an MOT, I do have a set of original 'Cheesegrater' type alloys with good tyres, but a price will have to be negotiated separatey if you want those.

    Interior

The interior is complete, with MG red carpets and seatbelts (highly sought after as they switched to grey after this)
if i was being critical, i would say it is a little musty, due to not being used
the headling is in one piece and still on the ceiling, which is remarkable for a felt headlined maestro.
    Front electric windows, working fine.
There will be no radio fitted

    History and Paperwork

Purchased by Mr R H Coleman, of Wanstead, London frim The Ray Powell Group, Eastern Avenue, Ilford, Essex on 13/02/1987

These are the Stamps in the Service Book

    21/05/1987 - 1192 miles - Ray Powell Group
    4/09/1989 - 17327 - Ray Powell Group
    7/8/1991 - 26234 - Ray Powell Group
    26/10/1994 - 34870 - Cambelt done - Messrs D Houlding and Son, Heybridge
    21/05/1996 - 39407 - Houlding and Son - Heybridge
    22/04/1997 - 44713 - Houlding and Son - Heybridge
    08/01/1999 - 56306 - Houlding and Son - Heybridge
    05/04/2000 - 62820 - new cambelt - Houlding and Son - Heybridge
    1/11/2000 - 66465 GT Totham Garage - Mordon
    28/08/2001 - 72327 - GT Totham Garage - Mordon
    08/08/2002 - 81704 - GT Totham Garage - Mordon
and then there is no more room in the service history book!

unfortunately there is no service history between the last stamp and now, that i can find, but in my 7 months of ownership I have done an oil and filters (air and oil) change.
It has only done 10,000 miles since the last recorded service in 2002

All old tax discs dating back to 1987

    -----------------------------

i have plenty more pictures if you want me to email them.

Reasons for Oli to buy this:
              • He's older and more able to insure it than before
              • He trusts the seller, and indeed bought his last from Steve
              • This one is in better nick than his last one
              • It's an earlier one with red bits inside
              • He loves them
              • He has an empty garage

Reasons for Oli not to buy it:
              • Er...
              • I'll get back to you.

If you can get it MOT'd then I would if I were you. At least then it can be driven away.

I know the car is early and quite rare, but £475 for a car with rust and no mot is keen. To say I'll get an mot but I'd expect more is also keen.

Without an mot the value would be its weight frankly. £475 with an mot is approaching the right value.

I'm only saying this as I have some idea of how much it would cost in time and money to get to a good condition. And lets face it, after an mot there is still many hours due on this one.

I don't disagree with the sentiment, but have you seen the rises in value recently of our cars? Everyone still thinks we are in the age of £50 cars. Well we aren't. If a standard turbo diesel with shot bodywork can command 400, then there isn't any reason why I can't expect north of £500 for a suitable rare car.

Of course we are all guilty of this when it comes to selling our things. It may not fetch that when it inevitably goes on eBay soon. But that completely different than selling to a group of enthusiasts who know about the collectability of a certain model. .

Fair point, no I guess I haven't. I remember the thread of the seller of a maestro for a crazy amount and the *ahem* 'lively debate that followed'. Has this rise in value been reflected in the practical classics listings?

But yes if a grotty TD went for £400 then I guess you are around the money with this.
