I don't think people realise just how rare they are now.

I think they do now, but didn't. Total quantity of Montego Turbos outnumbered Maestro Turbos more than 10-1, so they seemed to be relatively plentiful. Because of that, a lot will have met their maker as soon as they required any work which cost more than their realisable worth. A lot will have been scrapped by the garage when they were traded in for something newer. A number of them were butchered to turn standard Maestro EFis into Turbos. And a good few of them found themselves wrapped round trees and lampposts. What remains are cars which escaped all of those fates by sheer luck.

Yes your right. I bought my Montego Turbo in 97. It was in Stoke and cos I didn't know Stoke too well, the owner agreed to meet me just off the motorway so I could follow him back to his place. Although not intentional, this gave me the benefit of seeing if the car ran straight which of course ti didn't. It was crabbing! When we got back to his house I told him and almost walked away there and then. He said he was totally unaware ( which I suppose he must have been to have let me follow him). Looking round the car, I could'nt help notice a huge dent in the passenger side rear alloy. I made him get an alignment check which showed up a bent stub axle. I ended up buying the car at a knock-down price and fitted a second hand axle complete with stub axles. Realised this replacement axle was from an estate when I came to re-pipe the flexi hoses! Similarly cables differ too. The previous owner reckoned he bought the car with the dented wheel, but as I was leaving I asked him what he did for a living. He replied that he taught skid pan and defensive driving for the Police! He kept a straight face too!

Seems very difficult to pin down exactly how many are on the road. Mine has been on a SORN for a while now. Here's a pic of it from tonight just to make sure it hasn't ran off whilst I've not been looking. Dust is starting to gather, and the mirrors are off as I can't get it into storage otherwise!

Pretty sure there's a white one on ebay being broken. Bodykit and engine spoken for but all other parts available. I quite fancy the interior out of it for my bro's Turbo #396 which has been converted to mk3 spec (not particularly well). Trouble is as usual it's hundreds of miles away.

According to my calculations
They sold 92 MG Montego Turbos per month, whereas MG Maestro Turbos were at 16.8per month.In theory that would mean an unlikely 2765 MG Montego Turbos for the same period- that doesn't take into account that MG Montego Turbo peak sales were in its earliest years.
Meaning the Montego was 5.5times "more popular" than Maestro pro rata

help...

I am after a tickford turbo maestro, I need to know how the chssis numbers work to understand the genuine thing from a mock up. I have been offered one on chassis number 138 how do i know this is correct??.

I am new to the maestro scene but love these sporty types. However i have checked this article and found no number 138 can some one confirm the reg to ensure i buy the right thing.List of remaining Tickford Turbos . I still have not found the 138 chassis/number plate to confirm the real mckoy. HELP members please

Welcome to the forum

There is no correlation between the VIN number and the Tickford build number. Tickford Turbos have a VIN number which begins SAXXCTWT. The only exception is Tickford #1 which received an MG 2.0i VIN number beginning SAXXCTWU

Perhaps you could also edit your post to remove the long list of Turbo reg numbers...a link to the original post looks much tidier

As John says, it has nothing to do with the car's VIN. To answer your question, you could find out if it is genuinely number 138 by matching the vehicle's registration on this list of complete* Turbo numbers:

PS: #138 on that list appears to have been unlicensed since 2006.

I look after the register at the moment and can advise on if it is likely to be a real one.
The biggest giveaway is the VIN number that has TWT in it rather than anything else. This at least proves that the vin number is from a tickford car.

No.6 is owned by a member of the MG 'M' Group. He does not post on forums but I saw the car a few weeks ago at MG Saloon Day.

Might I ask why #370 is missing from both list's?

Especially as It is sat in the barn , and has been for over 2 years.

I am guessing it is because it needs a vehicle identity check due to cat c write off and thus won't appear on the vehicle license website/database which the list will have been created from.
