Really it'd be crazy to keep hydraulic lifters with your potential. Solid lifters will enable you to get a much more aggressive profile than 285's. You are right, newman can reprofile a 285 like spec to still work with hydraulics, but if you are going to extend the rev limit, and spend much time at the top end, say revving to 5k+ then solid lifters are the way forward. Once you hammer the engine for aggressive bursts for longer than a few hours the oil will thin out and the profile, and your timing suffers. Again it is really the only way to get true value back from the money spent on porting and converting to a big valve head.

Stick with 285's and hydraulic lifters and your head will flow as well as a head with 270 piper cams, and a home-brew port and polish!

Obviously it all depends which way you want to go and what your power goal is. But, that is a tricky line to take with you on this as you say 300~ but your spec says 700+ I'm just saying if you want the ultimate engine it makes sense to go for it.

been playing with gearboxes today, fitted new uprated bearings and seals and changed my 5th gear from a diesel box, because i was using late Ti box fitted with Quaife diff which has correct speedo ring fitted.
At 70mph would sit at 2,900 revs, did check with tomtom and speed was only 2mph out.

she wasn't happy state of living room!

top ones from diesel box note slightly smaller to make gearing longer

      picture of diff

all done ready to fit, with new engine mounts!!
job well done, hoping revs will sit around 2,200 now making it lot easier on the pocket, and motorway cruiser

Don't forget to remove the oil restrictor (if one was fitted) in the block.

Reminds me of a sausage based snacks TV advert:
"It's a bit of an Animal"

Is that oil cooler going to get much cool air being that close to the turbo and at the back of the engine?

Cool blog, hopefully provide me with some inspiration.

Peter - you've done a good job painting the block. I'm wondering where the core plugs came from - rimmers possibly? Those ARP studs look like they might fit the O series engine?? Going to be one very quick reliable maestro - top stuff!

Core plugs from rimmers, only couple of pence each, do you want me measure the APR studs if that will help you?

Yes I was thinking that Peter - if you can measure the length that would be great.

That's incredibly interesting to me as those measurements are identical to the longest studs on the O series head. Just need to make up thick spacers that will equal them all up - which I wanted to do anyway fallowing advice from team 78. Where can I source ARP stud set like yours Peter - also cost of them?
