  • Perkins Belt Replacement and Tune Up

Does anyone have any recommendations for a company to replace the timing belt and sort out the injection/valve timing on my Diesel estate?

There are plenty of garages that will do the belt for me, but all draw a blank on adjusting the Bosch VE mechanical timing.

I would like for someone familiar with the setup of the engines and their various adjustments.

Im based in the Portsmouth area, so any close to there. but will consider any on merit. or even a fellow enthusiast

I have a DTI gauge set and an engine lock set, so I can provide the tools for the job

Does the timing actually need adjusting. If so any diesel specialist will do it at a price.

Its simple enough to do, there is a video online somewhere on how to do it.

I've always wondered about this. The pump is mounted on elongated holes which I've never played with.

If doing a timing belt I only swap that item and use the drill bits to hold it all together.

Unless there was serious problems with fuel economy I wouldn't touch the pump settings.

There is a big problem with power and economy on this car.

When I first picked up the car, it was unable to reverse up a sloped driveway without significant revs and pulling out of junctions was dangerous. In order to compensate for this I upped the fuelling (the disc with the dot In it), which now enables me to get to a speed high enough for the turbo to kick in in a more reasonable time and make the car a bit more bearable to drive

It is only returning 35-40mpg and the engine has done a genuine 40k miles.

Do you have a boost pressure air leak?

Had this on a land rover years ago that had massive lag due to a leak and turbo had to work harder to achieve reasonable boost but only on higher revs.

Unless it has been altered then it usually doesn't need changing. with 40k on it, it would be unusual to have distrubed the pump timing.

However if you need to check/change it all you need is a DTI and a suitable adapter to fit it to the pump. You then check the plunger lift at a certain position in the cycle and then adjust using the elongated holes if necessary.

I assume that the engine is timed correctly on the belt (the pump uses the B mark for the turbo and the A mark for the non turbo).

I will be there, not much to see but no harm in looking and listening to the engine.
