I am currently stripping a montego estate and wish to remove the complete electric sunroof mechanisum to fit in my maestro, the haynes tells me to remove the glass first but as the battery is disconected and have the loom gone, can I do it with the glass in situ?

Yeah, you can do it with the glass in and I have in the past with my Maestro. Bear in mind, however, that the glass is probably the heaviest single part and with it removed it's a lot easier to lower the sunroof tray.
The most important reason for removing the glass is because it make the job of refitting the assembly a doddle. And you don't risk scratching it on the metal of the car's roof. Perhaps that's why Haynes says that.

As I need to put the maestro glass in that isn't a problem, I will connect some power while the unit is out.

This seems like a suitable time to ask my question; does anyone know if you can put the steel body-coloured insert from the early VP into the electric sunroof tray insted of the glass?
By the way, I took an electric sunroof out of a Monty and did it with the glass in. Piece of cake. haynes probably just say that for safety reasons.

Having thought about it, I now recall seeing some reference an electric steel sunroof specified for the earlier Montego on Legacy EPC. Have a look at that (if you have a copy) and see which parts cross-refer, and you might well be in business.
