Is this the record for the shortest front wheel bearing life: 18 months and 22,000 miles? I wouldn't mind if I drove like a loony, but I drive like Aunty Mavis.
:rage:

I wonder if having 15" alloys makes a difference? I've never had to replace a bearing ever on my previous Maestro and Montego. I'll replace with a pair of genuine Rover/Unipart complete driveshaft/swivel hub (incl bearing) caliper assemblies available from Ledbury, which will be cheaper than having the existing bearings replaced (neatly overcomes my slightly perished n/s driveshaft gaitor too). So there!

Assuming they are the single piece bearings?

Non-genuine parts don't seem to be up to the job, which could explain the failure, if you fitted such an item.

Two-piece as you know are crap, and 20k isnt unusual!

But very unlikely the addition of 15 inch wheels would have caused any problem, my turbo still has it's original bearings after all this time and 126k, but they are the taper type, the ball bearing single piece isnt as good.

Thanks Gareth, Yes they are the one piece type complete with the staked hub nut. I'd got a tyre bay to fit the bearings last time as it was convenient, and I suppose they fitted some generic make like Power Train that were the ball bearing type, and made out of chocolate. I'll be using the latest spec taper bearings as you suggest and I still maintain you can't beat Unipart. Those "expensive" Unipart brake pads I fitted recently are absolutely first class - the quality remains long after the price is forgotten.

I wonder how last my front wheel bearing will last on the Monty?
I used a spare QH wheel bearing, fitted it myself at work using their press, touch wood its been ok but we shall see....

...And that's the key: If I had a press at work then there wouldn't be so much of a problem doing the bearings myself and there'd be no real hassle. QH stuff is either very good or very dodgy depending on what it is. My QH clutch cable snapped less than 2 years after being fitted.
