when i got this new toy of mine i found that the heater fan did not work i then spent the next few days going through the haynes manual (all 5 versions i have so far) trying to find out if u can remove the heater with out having to take out the whole dash i have the replacment fan from a "h" maestro which now no longer has most of it's dash as 3/4 of it is now sitting on it's back seat. the breakers in question had 1 2.0 i monty esate and 1 1.3 clubman masetro.
it seems that they are getting a bit rare in kent now getting parts is getting harder by the week down here.

Does the heater work on any setting. Quite often the heater fails on position I and II, but works on three.
I believe someone posted directions to remove the heater matrix from a monty without pulling the dash out, so this might be helpful.

I was talking rubish when I said "I would expect the heater will drop out under the dash, a bit fiddly though."

You could take the connector off and bend the pins slightly.

Dash out job Im afraid, later cars are wired differently to the early ones, if the resistor failed in an early one it would still work in pos 3, but on later ones you lose everything.

There is no way the heater will come out with the dash still on, the car was built around the heater :)
It is possible to remove the heater matrix but not the motor in situ. It's not hard to remove the dash anyway.

Quick run down. Remove 4 end bolts from the dash, remove centre bolt below radio (remove ashtray) remove steering wheel and indicator/washer stalks, dash panel etc. Then pull dash away from the windscreen (clips on) and then get behind the dash any undo the wiring plugs. Remove heater pipes from engine bay, undo the heater retaining bolts and whole heater unit comes out. You can then fix the blower.

Dash removal is as easy as that, not scary and goes back without trouble too. 15 minute job. Then you can attack the heater in a lot more comfort. I've had my dash out 3 times now, it gets addictive!

...wiring modification issues-rear elec windows, interior lamp delay/warning buzzer and some other reason, can't remember. Need to whip the dash off again soon for some more wiring mods - it's the only way to do it...unravel the insulation, solder new correct wiring in, reseal, job done! In actual fact I'm also going to have a look at my own heater shortly as well.
If you are unsure about doing a dash removal, remove a dash on a car in the scrappy by way of practice if you can find a suitable car.
If....

I have an early mg 2l efi with digital dash and the original style heater control. The hesater only works on the fastest setting.Apparently it is the resitto that has gone. How hare is it to get at this part and do u need to remove the dash to do it as the car is my only transport.
