Before I start I am not joking, nor am I selling anything.

I work for Granada television in Manchester as a researcher. I am working on a car "makeover" programme, which will be transmitted on Granada's "Men and Motors" cable channel and also on the ITV North region in the 7.30pm weekday slot.

The basic synopsis is that an owner has a car that either needs work, or modifying to fit into the owner's lifestyle. We take the car away and work on it keeping into mind the owner's wishes. We then take the owners away to a location roughly connected with his or her car (i.e. keep them occupied!) until the end of the show when they are reunited with their car.

The basic rules are:

1. The car has to be taxed and Moteed.
2. The car and owner must be located in North Wales, or the North of England, (as the programme will only be transmitted in the northern region and Men and Motors)
3. The owner has to be willing and enthusiastic enough to appear on television.

I have read postings on this forum and I recon that there are enough interesting characters on this board who may be interested or may know of someone who is. As all things we are limited by time and money. Our budget is approx £3,000 per car and we need to find willing owners (& cars!) by mid July.

We do not want di-hard enthusiasts, but someone who likes their car and doesn't really want to part with it.

I would like to feature a Maestro or Montego because I feel they are something a little different & certainly underrated particulary in their role of saving the British Motor industry from certain extinction in the 1980s. I am open to suggestions from fairly sublime to the daft, and would hopefully give these underrated cars some good publicity.

Anyone interested in having themselves and their car featured or who has any ideas whatsoever can either reply to this forum or e-mail me directly on marshallrk@hotmail.com or phone me on 07773 714 416.

Hmm.... now, there's a tempting thought. I wonder if £3k would cover getting my old green 1.3 renovated, to go all green with Advantage alloys and side rubbing strips, with a 1.3 Metro Turbo engine and ... maybe a cabrio conversion? Simon once did a speculative drawing of a Maestro cabrio, and it looked fantastic!
Wonder how far it is off tax and MOT status!

Rob,
Would you consider featuring F170, my recently acquired Maestro 1.3 Special, which requires a certain amount of renovation?
I have started to bring it up to original spec. and like yourself consider the car to have been greatly overlooked in past motoring features.
It has potential but has done 91,414 miles, has a gold seal replacement gearbox which is noisy to say the least, and the engine wear is getting more obvious.
However, with a bit of work it will be in as new condition.
To help with the estimation of cost, listed below are the items needed to achieve this:
Replacement engine/ gearbox,
Interior headlining, (still available from Rover)
Radio/cassette player, (Philips R570/R670)
Repair to headrest support on passenger seat,
Underseal/rust prevention,
Possibile new windscreen,
No bodywork apart from need of new bonnet.

Car is located in the Manchester area, and I am willing to appear on the program.

The following is an image of vehicle photographed recently.

You can kit my car out performance wise if you like! I was thinking along the lines of a Rover 220 Turbo 16v engine conversion and perhaps but not essentially a respray. If anyone knows how to fit air con I would be up for a modification along those lines as well. My car is a Turbo Diesel and I don't rely on it every day so I am O.K. about it being away for a while.:)
