:banghead: Hello, me again. Anyone got suggestions on grating into reverse, sometimes and squeaking from Power steering on and off when turning right, please:rolleyes:

PG1 boxes are known for a little crunch into reverse, especially if done too quickly. It could be a clutch worn out, but try 'double de-clutching' and see if that helps prevent the crunch.

Power steering belt on the Perkins is a much better arrangement, i've never heard mine squeak, sounds like your's is incorrectly tensioned or the belt is simply worn out.

Thanks for your replies. I have replaced the PAS belt but will recheck its tension, it didn't seem to be coming from that area. Is it possible its the pump or rack??, seems weird it only does it turning right.
Clutch seems fine in forward gears at present. Will have to check the oil level.;) Is it a mammoth job to replace the clutch? I have only got the Haynes that covers the engine so far.

Hi Crunching into reverse, is almost certain to be the clutch centre plate (friction plate) sticking on the splines of the gearbox input shaft and nothing else wrong with the clutch itself. This can be cured by just cleaning up the spines and lubricating with the correct grease, but as you have to strip the clutch down to do it I suppose most people would probably wait until there was a major problem with the clutch before rectifying the prob.

Cheers Gary ;)

;) Thanks for your reply Gary. Ummmm, I suppose there is no way of squirting something through somehow? I know you don't want anything to go on the clutch plate. Any way, now that I've done the Head gasket, I can try and clear off all the accumalation of oily gunge from the gearbox, so I can see what's going on. Cheers Steve.

Steve, as stated by others the crunch into reverse is a common feature of the PG1 box, it even affects many MGFs. It can be avoided by a simple little trick which soon becomes a good driving habit - while keeping the clutch disengaged just select 2nd before reverse.

I avoid crunch into reverse by pausing between pushing the gearstick downwards and pushing it forwards; I find that a delay of a second or so completely eliminates reverse crunch. No idea why.

;) OK, thanks lads. It hasn't done it now for a couple of days, been taking it a lot slower and give a slight blip on throttle before engaging. Will bear your techniques in mind, and try them if it happens again.;)

F447, suggest you don't blip the throttle, that'll only tend to make matters worse. The problem is actually caused by momentum and sometimes frictional drag from the engine making the gearbox input shaft (and hence the gears on it) turn slowly, which they are still doing while you engage reverse with a stationary reverse output gear. As reverse has no synchro the gears crunch as they mesh. Blipping the throttle will make the gears turn faster = bigger crunch. Pulling towards 2nd (or any other gear with synchro) will stop the gears turning with the synchro cones, then quickly into reverse, both gears stationary = quiet mesh.

;) OK David, consider wrists slapped. Just a habit that seems to work well on the Trucks that I drive.
