My 93 Maestro TD has developed the occasional problem of continuing to run after I've switched off the ignition. I've got round this by switching the ignition on and off several times and it eventually gets the message and stops. My Haynes manual tells me this is a fault with the stop solenoid but, before I head to the garage to get this replaced, are there any other likely causes of this problem?

it seems like the stop soleniod from what youhave discribed. The soleniod is sticking open and allowing fuel though the diesel pump, even when the feed has been taken away.

There may be a relay controling it, and if so that would be your first port of call. Much more likey to get a stuck relay. If there is a relay, when the engine is running with the key in, you should have 12volts to the soleniod, and when the igintion off, the feed should go away, if not relay stuck. In which case tap the relay, the feed should disapper and the car cut out.

Not tried it myself but undo the multiplug connector on the front of the pump with engine running and if it stops, you can be more certain the solonoid itself works and it could be ignition switch related.

Thanks for these suggestions. I'll put the multimeter in the car and wait for the problem to occur again so I can investigate further. Knowing my luck it'll probably behave perfectly now!

Sounds like a faulty stop solenoid to me. Might be worth undoing it and checking that there isn't anything making its operation sticking like some dirt or a sliver of rubber stuck in there.
