Having nearly completed the replacement of my 93 turbo diesel head gasket only the turbo remains to be fitted. As I said in my ten week long Diesel Head Woes thread the fins jam when the two halves of the assembly are bolted together, but free up if the assembly is split.
It is almost as if the presence of a gasket to distance the two halves by 1-2 mm would free the exhaust fins, but surely there is no gasket meant to be there? Has anyone come across this weirdo before please?
The fins seem to be in good shape. With a winter break in my labours the TC was kept inside the car for the duration, it was working fine upon removal.
I've managed to find a replacement TC in a scrapper but if this fault is something stupid I could save £40......

I've not taken one apart yet (and long may that continue) but perhaps the shaft has been pulled up too far. meaning that the fins foul the casing. Have you done any dismantling of the turbo? Perhaps there is a thrust washer/bearing missing from one side. Is there a lot of lateral play in the shaft, i.e., can you slide it in and out of the bearing?

At the moment I've got it soaking in oil for 24 hrs as per an earlier post. I didnt dismantle anything, just removed the semicirc holding plates to expose the exhaust fins and try and detect any obstruction. There's a large circlip, about two inches across, which I assume will expose all the innards?
