View Full Version : Low rev diesel power

Hi all, sorry have not been about mcuh recently, but work has pretty much taken over my life in the last few months.

However, I have a bugging problem, which I was hoping for a bit of advice on. The TD van I have, which has done 152k and runs nicely, no back pressure from the oil cap, HG in good order, has a sever lack of low power torque. It pulls away really sluggishly, and at low revs in the gears, it will not "speed off" as such, but sort of dawdles and thinks about it, until the turbo cuts in, then it starts moving. All the time the turbo is running, its fine, and accelarates very swiftly when its at speed.

Its getting to the point where its dangerous, as unless you rev the guts out of it at a junction, it just won't pull away. It has no EGR on it (the engine was pre EGR), and I have recently fitted a new clutch, as I thought this could be the cause. The old clutch was beyond it, but it has only slightly improved the lack of power.

The only obvious thing to me may be the gearbox itself, which wines constantly. It has never jumped out of gear, so as much as I know the gearbox bearings are worn, I don't the gearbox is quite ready to be ditched.

I have thought about tweaking the injector pump, but not sure where to start here, besides the pump is a recon pump which has only done 20k and was fitted by Lucas not long after I got the van, as the old one sprung a nasty leak.

Any thoughts gratefully received! Rich

I'd guess the pump wants tweaking. especially if it is a new one as it will have bedded in a bit.
Gearboxes wither work or don't really.
If you were near I'd volenteer to tweak it for you! I wrote some instructions a while ago which might be useful for you.

I would second what ETV says and just to add, it would be also worth checking the injection pump timing and the delivery plunger stroke.
