Hey there,
So you thought there'd be no questions this time round did you?!
Well it's all going well (that's to say that the bit that Simon H is doing is fine!!) However I can't get the pinion out of the gearbox.
I've removed speedo cable, the intermediate box that's bolted to the gearbox, the U-shaped clip, and the short length of cable that sticks out of the gearbox. I've tried to lever out the top of the pinion, I've tried pulling, aggling etc it out but no luck!
What's keeping it in?

Is it the type that is clamped in with a small bolt and a sort of funny shaped washer that keeps the speedo drive from being pulled out.

Yeah it's kept in place by a bit of metal with a straight edge which is bolted to the top of the gearbox. The straight edge fits in a groove on the side of the speedo pinion.
I've managed to remove the metal collar that sticks up from the gearbox - the bit what the U-clip pushes onto but no luck getting the rest of it out.
Grrrr!

With the bolt and clamp off it should just pull out, can be a bit of a fiddle to come out and go back in. I have had to lever under where the clamp fits before.
I had trouble getting one from a scrap car,so much so that I left it in the end.
There was a 10mm bolt which I undid but the felt totally solid so i assumed there must be something else.

Cheers for all the replies, chaps.
I've soaked it in Plusgas and I've had to leave it as it is and travel back to Cambridge for the week. I'll hopefully get a chance to sort it next weekend!
I do have a few questions though as I wonder if I've bought the wrong transducer. Cat found me a PDF of a PG-1 gearbox repair manual (http://tinyurl.com/4kjd97). In the following photo a speedo transducer can be seen, but it's different to the one I bought from a Rover 820.
My unit replaces the whole unit including the pinion whereas the picture below suggests that there's a transducer that plugs into the existing speedo cable pinion:

For those who want to see what I'm up against, on the following picture I've removed the top collar from part 3 and the bolt/retaining metal part. The rest is stuck in the box...

I hope PlusGas is as good as they boast ;-)
Hi Simon, the rover speed transducer will happily sit in the maestro speedo drive.

Hi SimonR, The speedo drive is a close fit in the gearbox bore and it is prone to sticking due to a little bit of dissimilar metal corrosion and the rubber ring seal sticking. If you are changing the drive you can risk putting a pair of mole grips on it and turning it side to side whilst levering the drive upwards. It should come out ok like that.;)
The speed transducer in the picture is the one fitted to the early MG's with the digi dash but from what I undertand you are ok to use the Rover 800 type.

Hey guys, cheers for your advice and reassurances. I was feeling really depressed about this yesterday because my car's currently unable to have the manual speedo because I damaged the pinion and I can't get the rest of it out to insert the R820 transducer.
I think I've rather knackered it because I've removed from the pinion the only bit I can successfully get a pair of molegrips on. I think the only way to go it now is either to lever it from the small slot on the side (this wasn't working yesterday) or break it up and remove it in lumps. Either way I think I've reached the point of no return!!
I can't do anything to it until the weekend as I'm away from home at the moment but I think it might be hammer and chisel time...
I'm going to post a pic of the R820 transducer later on so that hopefully someone can reassure me that it's the right one.
Ah, sweet mystery of Maestroing!

Not wishing to be the bearer of bad news, but the last one I had the mis-fortune to have to change was a right pig of a job.
So much so in fact that i broke x2 flat bladed screwdrivers trying to lever it out while giving it a little gentle persuasion  .
There are different types (plastic and metal) and although in my instance the number of teeth on the drive gear were the same, where it connected to the lower end of the speedo cable was not.
I only had the cable from the exhisting car/vehicle intended to be used. (the cable from the "spare" 'box had long gone)
In the end I split the gearbox took the gear cluster out and had to drift the metal drive assembly out from the inside of the gear casing. :banghead:

it's often easier to shift the speedo drive gear when it's turning - so put the box into gear and turn the input shaft by hand while trying to extract the speedo drive. If the box is still in the car, leave it in neutral and try turning a road wheel back and forwards instead.
