I've just exchanged the normal flasher unit for a four bladed one so that the caravan icon will light up when I attach a trailer with lighting board.

The problem I have is that the unit ticks quietly at flashing speed when I turn the ignition on. The indicators work when I move the stalk but the ticking sound continues when the signal is cancelled.

Any suggestions?

I bought the unit from Lucas who I assumed knew what they were doing since the salesman looked in the catalogue before ordering.

JOE is a 1.6 vp 1983 S series with 37K. No other mods apart from the tow bar wiring.

Do the indicators and the dash warnings all work ok?

Have you tried attaching a towboard?

all the instuments work fine. I haven't tried the tow board yet - I got woried when I heard this ticking (which can be felt by putting finger or two on the unit). I'll try the board tomorrow.

Strange, our Montegos (and others I have taken parts from) with dealer fitted, Rover branded tow bars had Bosch flasher units fitted, which have just been working like any other flasher unit - i.e. being quiet usually. There must be a fault somewhere, as there should be no current going through the unit when not indicating. Is there a fault in the wiring of the tow bar socket?

Alexander

That's where you went wrong ! Take it back and ask them, if you don't get a straight sensible answer then ask for your money back. A trailer place is more likely to know what they are talking about.

Thanks to all
It's back to halfords then - I have tried them but perhaps I spoke with the wrong sales assistant - he looked about twelve.

Don't speak to them, just take the old one out and bring it into the store and compare it with the ones on display. the one you are after has 4 pins rather than 3 I think. Its been a while though since I looked at one.

I went to Halfords. Accosted by the manager.

He looked for JOE on the system and then said 'Oooh a Maestro!'

So that's all right then.

Heavy duty unit duly located and Bingo! It works perfectly.

I won't have a word said against them!

Thanks for all suggestions and help.

Some staff in halfords are very helpful and know about cars and have interest in cars. It depends on the store sometimes. I know the Bedford one is very good and the Wellingboro one not so.

And also just because someone looks young it sghould not be though they know nothing (I KNOW THIS HASNT BEEN SAID) i have spent me career sofar in the motor trade being looked down because of my age. Left school at 16 and was a LandRover factory trained technicain by the age of 19, to NVQ3 level. Rebuilt my first Maestro at 18. Left Landrover at 21 and was expected into RAC as a patrol technicain. Am 24 next week, so will be into my 8 year of being a proffisal in the motor trade, but i still get the same old sods that wont believe that they have flooded their old MGB, that they have had for years by pulling the choke out in the boiling hot sun after a 50 mile run. Always clam i am wasting my time and theirs by removing the plugs and drying them out, as it is 100% the piston rings, and it will never start with the choke in.........................................oh its started..............................oh i am sorry.......................can i by you a drink?

ok rant over
