Whilst dropping the engine/gearbox into my car today, we managed to lose a good deal of the oil from the gearbox onto the garage floor.

What kind of oil should I top it up with - and how is this best done?

BTW, this is a 2.0 MG Efi we're talking about..

Cheers!

SR.

SAE 10W/40 IIRC? They say the gearbox oil should be removed before removing the engine, and in any case the g/box oil should be replaced at periodic intervals unlike the VW box.

The PG1 gearbox should be filled with MTF94 oil, which is available from Rover and Landrover dealers. Rover and landrover used to say the oil should be changed every 8 years or 96000 miles, though every 4 years 48000 miles would probably be better. Engine oil can be used but would have to be change every year and it is not recommanded.

Cheers folks!

One other thing - where's the drain/filler plug - and what does it look like?

Sorry for being so useless ;-)

The recommended stuff in the manual for your car will be 10w40 engine oil changed every 40k? miles. However the later Rover PG1 gearboxes were filled with MTF94 which is better and was supposedly a fill for life oil. However I'd change it every time the cambelt is done as a guideline. The oil is available from Rover/honda/landrover dealers as well as unipart outlets (you'll need 2.2 litres I think for an empty box).

For now engine oil will be fine just remember the change it every second oil change.

Filler is 17mm bolt behind the nearside inner cv joint where it enters the box. Pour oil in until it trickles out of the hole. (This is often rather tight for some unknown reason!)

The drain is a 3/8ths?? square drive which you can fit a normal ratchet into to undo. Its at the bottom on the same side of the box.

Cheers for that, Dan. I've bought the MTF oil and am now off to fill her up!
