Now my ignition problem, i'm looking at the cooling. I had a loss-of-power problem over a year ago and I replaced the temp sensor as recommended on this forum. It didnt cure the problem, but I did eventually trace it to a leaking air pipe.

Anyways, since then my Efi is running very cool (1/4 on the temp gauge). Is this normal? If not, what can I do to cure it?

when mine was efi it never really went past 1/4 of the way up the gauge

now its t16 and 1600 rad its sit's below 1/4 weird or what

It certainly can't be described as normal, the gauge should read around the half way mark. If the heater does not get hot then the problem could be just a sticking thermostat, and can easily be cured by fitting a new thermostat.

Also if the problem is just the thermostat you can usualy get the gauge to read normal if you run the engine at 2000rpm with the car stationary until the fan comes on, but then if you drive down the road the temperature gauge will quickly fall to around a 1/4 mark.

If the gauge reads a 1/4 more or less as soon as you start the car then you have a break in the wiring between the sensor and the EFI ECU or a faulty new sensor. To check the wires you can bridge the wires in the coolant sensor harness plug and the high temp warning light should flash if every thing is ok.

Thanks G Force, I did change the thermostat a few months ago, and did not make any difference. It was the 88C one from Halfrauds. Strange huh?

on both my c reg vp monty efi and the f reg mg monty efi the gauge sits a quarter all the time and the heater is nice and warm and I have driven these like it for tens of thousands of miles, where as the later 2.0 petrol monty sits at just under half.

And my mates mg maestro 2.0 sits at a quarter too his is a d plate.

If they have the wrong temperature sensor fitted then they also read low.

Perhaps the new sensor that you fit is either the wrong one or it is faulty. You could run the engine until the cooling fan comes on and then check the resistance value of the sensor it should read between approximately 200 and 350 ohms at that temperature.

My montego 2.0i and my masetro turbo never went above 1/4 on temp gauge. would go to just above half after a run and then stood in traffic, but then the fan came in and brought it down again.
