Hahaha - so we've got to the fun jobs under the car and they're not going so well.

How do you get the geabox linkages off the gearbox on an MG 2.0?

One is easy - it a 10mm bolt that goes through a large rubber bush type thing on the gearbox.

The other is't quite so obvious. It's the one that pushes in three clicks into the gearbox. There appears to be a cable clip type thing around the shaft near the gearbox end which covers what looks like a dowel, going through the main shaft. The hinged parts which are further up the linkage towards the back of the car are rivited so they don't come apart as such.

I was working on the principle that you drift the dowel out but this doesn't seem to be the answer so far.

Cheers...

Yes thats the way to do it:D you just need a Mr punch:laugh: the same size as the roll pin. It is a sprung roll pin

Cheers, Gary.

Mr. Punch it is :D

We'rejust having five minutes off to celebrate getting the exhaust down-pipe separated from the manifold then I'll get me hammer out.

Push the selector shaft into the gearbox as far as it will go, so to stop it bouncing as you hammer the punch;)

If you ever get to the point where the damn roll pin won't drift out (as long as your intention is to remove the gearbox for say clutch replacement etc) then it is possible with the rear of linkage trailing, to remove box and drag out the linkage with it.

Then it is 'much' easier to get at the roll pin and put some support behind and 'far' more room to whack the pin out and part the linkage.

When removing the gear linkages, remember that you'll also need the support plate at the rear as the VW boxes don't have them and you'll need them. From memory it involves removing most of the exhaust heatshield too as it has a sort of cage support which is is all attached to (it'll make more sense when you are under there looking at it!)

you will need to lift the centre consle in the car and swap over the gearstick rubber seal. just 3 bolts.

If you are have probs getting the pin out you can just undo it from the bolts under the floor, then hammer it out with the box out.

and yes to remove the support plate for the linkage you need to undo the rear heat sheild bolts and slide it backwards.
