The new Sniff Petrol is out with a headline story about MG Rover and a mention of the Maesty. Fabulous.

Sniff Petrol's write up of the Maestro from Issue 10....

"It's the early 1980s. Ford's MkIII Escort is hailed as being modern for ditching live-axles and rear-wheel-drive. Then along comes a spacious, easy-to-drive, versatile hatchback boasting a sophisticated engine management computer, an advanced flat-pack wiring loom and numerous techy touches like a fully bonded windscreen and moulded polycarbonate bumpers. The future should have started here. But it, quite liderally, didn't start at all because all this new tech came from British Leyland, the people who'd have trouble producing toast. In fact, the problems started much earlier, in the styling department. The Maestro was styled at Land Rover's studio in Solihull where, apart from saddling it with those gawky looks, they worked to off-roader principles, hence the tragic
panel gaps, vague trim fit and inexplicably high floor. On early Maestros the engine management would set the idle speed to anywhere between 500 and 5000rpm, the bonded screens leaked water and the plastic bumpers cracked in cold weather. Oh, and the clever wiring loom never worked and had to be replaced with a conventional one, which didn't fit the wiring ducts properly. When it came to facelift time anyone assigned to the job developed a nervous tic, cried a bit, gave up and went to become a monk. Once again BL had snatcheddefeat from the jaws of glorious victory. Brilliant."

Not quite media - but if anyone watches the music video for "Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls" you may spot a white MG Maestro 2.0(EF)i in the traffic scene....

Well spotted I'll look out for that on Top of the Pops 2.

Whilst watching "Open all hours" a classic series if ever there was one, I spotted 2 or 3 maestros lurking in the background.

Chris and I were watching an episode of "Stargate-SG1" on DVD last night - sci-fi series set in the future for those that don't know. There was a news report featuring archive footage of "Earth back in the olden days" during a flood. The footage was supposed to be of the USA, but it's clearly not, as there's a Montego Saloon splashing its way along a road! I'll try to get a screengrab of it to post!

I always thought Stargate SG1 was based on the present, except they had found the stargate and used it to travel to other worlds.

You're right on that :) It's Chris that's the Stargate fan - I just watch the odd bit in the background.

Guess I should watch more carefully!

In Trainspotting, one of the characters, I think it is Spud, is seen collpsed in the gutter at one point. The car parked next to him is a Maestro with metal bumpers.

There's a BRG L reg Montego 2.0GTi estate on an ITV program called The Last Detective, which tonight apparently died on the owner.

On one of the many shopping channels on Sky, there is a car polish tested on a red K reg Maestro too.

:D
