:( Hello, I'm new here. Recently got myself a 1989 Montego TD Saloon.
I've grown to like this car, and would like to keep it on the road, if I can fix some problems at a sensible price. I've been quoted some silly prices for some parts that I think the car needs.
Local Parts Shop / Rover Dealer
£ 90 - £165 for a Heater Matrix.
£ 50 - £ 68 for Head gasket set.
£144 - £166 for Waterpump.
£ 45 £ 54 for Front wheel bearing.
Can anyone tell me where I can get these and other parts at sensible prices please. I have never been quoted such high prices for any other car I've had before. Thanks in advance.

Those prices are stupid, I wouldnt pay them. Do they include fitting. I know a water pump for a 1.3 is only 40 from rover and I cant see there being much price difference

The first thing to do is go on ebay (register if you havn't already done so its worth it) and see if any of the parts are on there, head gasket sets come up everyso often, as do water pumps and wheel bearings. There is a company called SMC Trading who sell through ebay and are very good + sell lots of parts for our cars.

Alternativly join the club and take advantage of the parts section, Marias in charge and may be able to help? She's helped me out with parts before.

50 to 68 quid for a HG sounds silly (Its only £11 for a Unipart 1.3 HG) I know the O series is a different engine but prices surly dont differ that much.

Then there's always scrapyards, they might have a car in you could get a decent heater matrix from (or the steel pipes going into it as they corode through, maybe gasket between pipes and matrix also, just a thought)

These people run a good mail order service for second hand parts
Maestro and montego parts and salvage (http://www.montego-and-maestro.co.uk/)

TD Waterpumps are expensive. You would be looking at over £50 if you can get one cheap on EBAY, probably about £100 from a motor factors I seem to remember.

Also I seem to recall headgaskets for the TD are also expensive.

The front wheel bearing sounds expensive tho. I would have a look on EBAY for some as a few come up quite often.

No idea on the heater matrix sorry.

Thanks H48 HPE, The prices quoted to me are just for the parts, no fitting. I don't mind becoming a member, so long as I can keep my car an economical one. Luckily for you the 1.3 engine has been fitted to many different models, probably making parts more available and cheaper.

Ive just looked at the club spares section in the members area and I see that there are two waterpumps suitable for the TD engine (maestro part No.s but I would assume them to be the same) I'd definitely PM maria, Joining the club really is usfull even to cover you for 'emergency situations' like this

PS Hope you didnt mind me disclosing said info Maria.

Don't mind at all. I think the waterpumps we have are for non-turbo 2.0s. The problem with the spares stock at the moment is that it's all 7 miles away from the house, so it takes a while until I can get a chance to dig out the parts from behind various cars.

Apologies to all who've contacted me about spares - I will get round to sorting things out soon!

Hi,
Local factors are usualy quite good for the bearing. Try Engine re-conditioners for the gasket sets, but get a good quality brand- Payen (O.E) or F.A.I etc. They are quite expensive (But not that much!!)
This is what i would expect to pay:
Heater matrix £30-£40 . Serck Marston
Head Set. £25-£35 .
Waterpump £80-85 . Factor
Wheel bearing £18-£23 . Factor
