Does anyone happen to know the stud pattern PCD for where the rear stub axle joins to the rear beam on the maestro/montego cars (NOT the actual stud pattern of the wheels)? I was just trying to find out if it is the same as the van or not.

Ahh so they aren't in a circle, the bolts are in a rectangular pattern are they on the saloon? I had assumed that they would be in a circle. D'oh.

No they are not in a circle... It would not to hard to drill new holes though...?

Have you thought of fitting the complte H frame? A bit of welding but the handling would be a lot better,

That would be a LOT of work. I'd have to fabricate suspension turrets, reinforce everything, change the braking system, get custom springs/shocks made. Not something I'll contamplate for now. Just wondering if I can use the car stub axle on the van axle, as it would make fitting the wheels easier.

I take it the car drums and back plate wont fit the van stub axle?
Have you got some wheels in mind? As if its just alloys you want in pretty sure the van PCD is the same as princess/ambassador and the latter had alloys on the VP. Now really going into gey teritorry were landcrabs the same? I think some were 5 stud but you [I]may[[be able to get hold of 14" 4 stud minilites

That was why I was asking the question above! To see if I can just swap the stub axles over. I'm fitting standard 15 inch cross spokes from the car. I'm doing this as I am also fitting a big brake conversion to the fronts which is only available on the standard 3.75 inch PCD format from the car (hence needing the rear drums to be car PCD.

Right see what you mean now :o Looking in the manual the van is arranged in a square with apropper PCD whereas the car has the top two bolts closer together. It cant be that hard as ive seen several vans with mg alloys.
The other way is to have a thin spacer made with car PCD on it but bolt it to the drum using the stud holes. Wouldnt be my prefered choice mind.

Cheers

Can't you get your exhisting (van) drums re-drilled to the same PCD as the cars? That way you are in a win win situation - you get to use the car rims and also benefit from larger braking on the rear. ( I think 1 of the circuit racers who post's/has posted on here uses van drums re-drilled on a hatch with IIRC large discs and SD1 calipers on the fronts)
Although if you dont have a lot of weight in the back you may find it a bit happy to lock the rears unless you slacken off the load compensator.

Yes that was my plan until I actually measured it to see if it would work. The problem is the much larger centre bore of the van wheels than the car wheels, which is why I considered swapping the stub axles. I may yet have to machine off he centre bore ring and just rely on the studs alone but I'd prever to have some positive location there if only to make fitting the wheels easier.

How about have the centre ring turned down slightly (or as much as you feel safe) and the wheel centres turned out/enlarged slightly?

And anyway, never mind all that - how about some pictures/info on the (L Series??) engine conversion!! ;)

I thought about turning the wheels out to fit but then I'd need to fit spacers to the front so that they'd fit and there isn't a lot of meat left between the centre bore and the wheel studs, so I'd like to avoid that if possible.

No progres on the L series conversion yet. it is still a 1.3 van, albeit lowered at the back (front still to do). so it looks a bit silly at the moment!

Yup already seen that car. it is very nice. I'm thinking about the front bumper too!

Just need to chose the colour first!

I think the turbo bumper would look better, the monty estate bumper looks ok on the back. Has the front rover bumper been modded or is it a fluke that it seems to fit quite well?

As regards paint I would go for white with 'Austin rover special projects' decals. Please bear in mind that could be as a result of stella :)
