Hello, I'm new to this forum, let me first introduce myselft.
I'm a 22 year old student from Sofia, Bulgaria. A have a 1996 make (yes, this is correct- Maestros were manufactured during 1996 here in BG) 1.3 petrol Maestro. I bought it last year with 187,000 km on it and replaced almost everything- even the engine, because it was in awful condition.
Anyway, I got it in pretty good condition and last week I changed the gearbox. The old one was a 5-speed manual, but the gears were difficult to switch and there was a lot of noise.
But after I got the new one installed, I started experiencing problems.
I seem to have shorter gears with the new gearbox and I kinda feel the acceleration is pretty poor. Here's how the car performed with the old gearbox:
1st gear up to 40 km.h
2nd up to 55 km/h
3rd gear up to 90 km/h
4th gear up to 115 km/h
5th gear up to 145 km/h
Now I seem to get:
1st- 20
2nd- 50
3rd- 70
4th- 110
5th- 130
And the acceleration is pretty poor. Also- loss of power- in my town there is a steep road where in the start of the slope I'm on 4th gear with 40 km/h and I could easily achieve 90 km/h. Now with the acc.pedal to the floor what I can get is 70.
I think I should get my carb set up, because I feel it's running too lean- when idle, the car is vibrating too much. Also, ignition timing. Any other ideas? Or maybe I just have to live with it? A good condition gearbox with shorter gears than the one which was for scrap.
Any help appreciated!
