Just some teething problems I hope, but I wonder if anyone could offer some advice on my 1.3 van engine?

After the first 150 miles or so, the oil pressure light has been coming on at idle. As soon as you touch the throttle, it goes out. Theres has been no oil burning or major oil loss, so I am convinced there is pressure there. It does not do it when cold, but all the time when warm. A new pressure sensor has not worked!

I put in 15W 40 diesel oil i'm afraid, as I had drained the old oil out, and fitted a new filter, then found that was the only oil I had, could this be a reason for it? Also, if the idle speed was to low, I would assume this would also be a factor?

Next thing, I found out I had set the timing wrong, it was 14 degrees BTDC at idle. It should have been 14 degrees BTDC at 1500rpm with the vacuum pipe disconnected. So I have now re-set this, the plugs no longer have carbon on them and it goes like a little rocket now! As much as it may be nothing to worry about, theres a lot of steam/water from the exhaust. From memory this was nothing to worry about when the engine is cold, but after a long run, I parked up last night, and there were wet black splatters all over the floor from the exhaust, and lots of steam/white smoke. Why does it do this? The air temperature was close to freezing, but it seems excessive for a hot engine.

Drivers side inner driveshaft is leaking grease. It was fine before, now there is grease splattered everywhere. There is no split in the gaitor, it seems to be coming from the gearbox side of the gaitor, as if it the metal tie has loosened off, although it can't loosen as its endless. How easy is this gaitor to change, as I have only ever done outer gaitors before.

Has anyone got a spare A series timing chain cover? My one has developed a slight hole in it around the oil breather, and the silicone bodge is not holding. Its not a major leak, just an annoying one. I have found one on a mini, but it has no timing marks on it, or oil breather canistor. So if anyone has one, in good condition.......?

Many thanks, Rich

oil light comming on at tickover is nothing to be worried about it just shows that the engine has plenty of miles on it.especially as it goes off when you rev it, as you know oil light comming on at speed it much more of a problem.

Have a look at the oil pressure relief valve, you will probably find this is badly scored and not seating properly .the best cure for this is replace it with a 9/16 ball bearing, this should make your oil light go out a bit faster and slightly increase the oil pressure if you have trouble finding one PM me.

As for your black depposits/steam,is the carb set up right? Are you loosing any coolant? Mind yesterday was not the best day to get a propper indication with it being so cold,i noticed our ZR was steaming quite a bit last night.
