A question. First, I fitted my new fuelpump (1.6 S) yesterday-much better after the old one leaked all over the engine for the..3rd time.

Now, I'm still getting the "drive from cold, pull up at a junction in Drive, engine goes to 400RPM and tries to die unless you restart it" issue that I posted about a few weeks back. However, I got it yesterday, and on killing the heater, the engine staggered from 400RPM to 850 and sat there..

When this happens, the car fills with the smell of strong unburnt engine gasses..oily/smoky..sucked in through the heater I assume. This then goes away when at speed, and can't be smelt again for the rest of the driving day. The engine shouldn't be venting any vapours though, surely?

Can't see anything obvious, or even smell it when under the bonnet with it warmed up and running...any ideas? It's like lifting the oil cap when hot and sniffing the fumes. I thought maybe leaking emissions piping on the back of the block ( :( sod to get at ).

It's a minor problem..just irritating. At least the new pump has eliminated a HUGE rattle from the engine..scarily..:)

Sounds to me like you might have a blocked breather, probably clogged with the infamous mayonaise.

Might be worth cleaning out the oil breather pipes to see what is lurking in them.

Just a thought.

Hi, if you have had an oil leak from the fuel pump area oil could be dripping on to the exhaust manifold maybe, so perhaps if you had the engine steam cleaned it may help.

Also there was a mod for the heater drain tube to stop petrol fumes entering the cabin, it consisted of a small rubber one way valve that pushed up the drain tube. check to see if yours has a valve, if not you never know they could be still available.

Cheers Gary ;)
