Hello everyone :)
Does anyone know the best/cheapest place to buy a diesel lift pump for a Maestro Turbo Diesel before its owner takes a sledgehammer to it?
Thanks very much,
Mike

Okay, thanks. :) Annoyingly, Google picked up quite a few references to new ones in eBay listings, but the auctions had already finished.

Mine is dead on the driveway at the moment! It was okay when I drove it in there, but then it wouldn't start the next day.
I thought it had run out of fuel, so I put a gallon in and worked the lift pump. I could hear something happening in the reservoir on the inner wing, so kept going. After trying to start it a few times, interspersed with pumping the lift pump, I had a closer look.
I undid the bleed screw on the top of the fuel filter housing, worked the lift pump and got nothing. I took the top off the lift pump and it was full of fuel. I took the outlet pipe off and nothing came out when I worked the pump, so I took the lift pump off.
The operating lever didn't appear to be doing anything, so I took it to bits and I think the diaphragm plunger had come off the end of the lever, because it came straight out. This doesn't explain why it wasn't pumping though, because (correct me if I'm wrong) the manual lever on the lift pump operates independently of the engine-operated lever. Anyway, I refitted the diaphragm plunger to the lever, put it back together and it appeared to be doing more than it did when I inspected it after taking it off, which led me to believe I had fixed it.
I fitted it back onto the engine, tried it again and got nothing. It is definitely doing more than it did because it is audibly moving air, but there isn't a one-way flow to it when I put my finger over the outlet. It sucks and blows when I would have expected it to just blow from the outlet. I can't see anything physically wrong with it.
I tried it by turning the engine over. Nothing. I tried filling it and also filling the outlet pipe with fuel and also manually drawing fuel from the fuel tank to the top of the inlet pipe. Tried it again and nothing.
So, it is currently dead with no apparent reason why that should be the case.
It is lucky to be in one piece at the moment because I have got an extremely short temper. I am going to try a new lift pump (if I can get one), and if that doesn't work it will be the sledge hammer.

Have you tried your local motorfactors. Mine didn't list them for the maestro TD but did for the montego TD, (They are identical). Also perkins will still sell you one (but it won't be very cheap), Diperk do their mail order parts service. Also Rimmer bros will similarly most likely be able to get you one but it won't be as cheap as a motorfactor.

I haven't checked further than the internet so far because I only started investigating the problem today. :)
I intended to run the car for a while (which I have!), then use the engine for one of my Land Rovers. The car has only done 42,000 miles, so the engine is in really good shape.
The only problem is that I sold all my Land Rovers, so I've got nothing to put the engine in!
Currently looking for another Land Rover. :)

I presume you are on the prima landy forum then? Also worth trying is your local diesel specialist as they'll be able to get you a lift pump or even a repair kit for your existing one.

I haven't joined that forum, but I have been reading some of the posts on there. It's a really good forum. :)
I'll see what I can find out locally on Monday. I expect someone local will have one. :)

Ring DiPerk up, they have a website you can search for. They will need your engine number, and they will send you an original genuine part next day. I belive there about £15-£20. If you ask on the phone, they can give you a 5% discount but only if you ask.
Water pumps are also a good buy from them, I have spent so much on non-genuine pumps, to find they don't last, and the genuine one is only a few £ more with a garuntee, and obviously being genuine will last.
I have seen new lift pumps sell on eBay for much more than the lift pump is new, so unless you get it for a few £, after adding the postage on, you can do better with a new one. Its not a hard part to get hold of. You could also try an LDV dealer, as quite a few LDV vans had the Prima engine in.

Thanks Rich and Graham
I've found DiPerk's website, so I'll give them a try. Looks as if my Maestro is in with a chance of survival!
