I think it may have been 1991 at least for the 1600 auto as my 1992 brochure does not show any 1600's in it. Come to that it does not show any auto options for the 1300 either.I have a 91 1600 auto lx on a h plate.

You DO?!? Hallelujah! Join the club matey! I also have a '91 LX Auto on an H plate...:) What colour is yours, may I ask?

You may indeed. It is azure blue over grey. My wife has a Mayfair 1600 auto on an E plate. I was very interested in your threads some time ago where you described fixing a slip on the gearbox by changing the gearbox oil. My wifes Mayfair has the 2nd to 3rd slip though it does not make tooo much difference it would be nice to get rid of it. For some reason the gearbox fluid is bright green which methinks might be the wrong one as I know its supposed to be redish. i might try changing it and seeing if that helps. Does your LX have variable intermittent wipe? Mine does not and I thought it should. Im not sure if perhaps the stalk had been changed at some point.

My LX does indeed have the variable intermittent wipe..so did my old C reg 1.6 base auto (because I fitted replacement stalks). I think the LX's should have had it...you may well have had a stalk change.

With regard to your autobox, green fluid is DEFINETLY not right!

ATF is red...well..pinky red. Smells too. NOT as bad as gear oil, but hardly roses.. Sort of..garlic I guess.

When mine was slipping the oil was worn out and was a reddish brown, with yellow bits. It was almost certainly past it's best and probably had been allowed to overheat in it's past.

As I found, the change is simple..and it's as easy to carefully remove and clean the filters at the same time. At the same time I'd recommend you remove the governor and clean it with something like carburettor cleaner spray or petrol..if the wrong oil is in, it might affect it.

You might find it takes a few changes to get the fluid flushed out fully...but I should think it'd be worth it for the peace of mind. A big tin of ATF is cheap...and more ecomonical than buying little bottles.

I'll be checking mine tonight...I hit a crow this morning and when my fluid pump started gurgling i pulled over to find the crow blocking a cooling vent on the torque converter..and then the converter "ate" it and ..yuk..:censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: ..engine wash time..:banghead:

If you want any details or anything, feel free to ask..:) Always nice to meet another Auto owner..:D
