Eletrical problem...

Hello all!!!
I have a small electrical problem with my TD:banghead:
When i turn off the ignition,my battery light illuminates and stays on,even with the key removed.It doesn't illuminate at position III.
Am i right in thinking my alternator is bu:censored: ered?

definitely a broken rectifier on the alternator. disconnect your battery or it'll go flat because its discharging through the alternator.

answer is a new alternator or get the old one fixed by having the diodes replaced (presumably thats what it is)

Have you charged the battery whilst its still wired to the car recently? that can cause that particular problem.

The rectifier and brushes are built into a small removable unit on the end of the alternator - you can swap this over for a new one... much cheaper than having the entire alternator re-conned.

Thanks for that Andy,i had a feeling thats what it was.Had a new battery this time last year,so i haven't had to charge it at all.
i have already taken the precaution of disconnecting the +ve feed,cheers mate.

Cheers Dave,any ideas on where i could purchase these parts? possibly a Rover dealer?

Id get a whole unit from the scrap yard, and just swop the whole lot over, then Id hang onto the old one and get the parts for it when you get chance and then fix it as a spare. a second hand one will probably cost a tenner.

it should be a lucas A127 65 Amp alternator you need.

the part number for the rectifier from rover is BAU 5813 (should you choose to go down that path)
