Hi all,
I live in Australia and have found an 1987 MG 2.0 EFI Maestro that is for sale. It came here from England years ago with 57 thousand miles on the clock. As far as i know it is the only one is Aust (i am aware of 3 Montegos).
My questions are these:
What simple mods can i do to improve the performance? Lowering, air intake, etc...
What problems should i look for? (it apparently has rust in 3 doors and the hatch)

I own an MGB and am in the MG car club here in Victoria (1100 members). I intend on using the car for competition, circuits, hillclimbs, motorkana's etc.
But may just use it for a daily driver. Any coments would be appriciated on any of the above. I know it is mad to buy a car that has no spare parts in the country, but, MG's can do that to a person.
Thanks

There are quite a few performance mods that are possible, (There is a race series in the UK that still runs these cars). Some of the racer fraternity will have the low down on what works and what doesn't.

The problems to look for are rust in the door bottoms, rear wheelarches and tailgate. Aside from that they are pretty hardy, it is rust that is the biggest problem which usually starts in the door bottoms tailgate and behind the rear bumper/boot floor. All of which is curable if you can get someone to fabricate the replacement metal work (as spares are rather rare to come by in Aus I bet!).

for spares, Daniel in NZ has Montegos and can lay his hands on a fair amount of stuff, also people will ship small items from UK (me, for one).

Yeah getting parts for maestros down here is near impossible. If you need any front sheetmetal or internal bits or anything like that drop me a line, Im in NZ and if there are any pieces you need off my 1.6 van I would be keen to help.

My vacuum linkages are all split - before you ask.

Thankyou everyone,
I will have a go at buying it, (i have made up enough reasons to justify it) we will see if my offer is good enough. If so you will hear about in a few weeks.
Thanks
