could be the sensor is faulty. Make sure you have enough coolant in the system to. It is important to have a working gauge or the car may overheat without you knowing causing engine damage.

The sensor is also used be the ecu to control the choke on petrol models.

To test sensor use ohm meter, remove sensor and put tip in some water with is 20c, you should get a resistance reading across the pins of 2.35-2.65k/ohms. Then try it again but with water of 80c and you should get a reading of 300-360 ohms. So the hotter the sensor the lower the resistance.

mine is working but never rises much and the heater is only just warm....is this due to a faulty thermostat...heard you can get higher temperature stats ..is this true?

It sounds like your thermostat maybe stuck open, or has been removed by a previous owner.

I wouldnt put in a high temperture thermostat, (they are around but mostly for cold climates, and it is normally the cool stats that are available) just a standard one as the heating system is nomarlly quite good on the petrol Maestros. (i have not had anything to do with the diesel models) and you wouldnt want the engine running to hot as the carb would struggle with fuel evaeration.

I had the same problem and was cured by a new thermostat.

Yes you can, standard they are 82 deg higher temp is 88 which makes quite a difference.

I know we are all different but I personally would not send my car in to be checked over, such a simple job, I would suggest getting another temperature sensor and fitting it to see if that does the job. Why spend money it is literally a 5 min job!! The higher temp stat is around a fiver, another simple 5 min job. Get in the Garage!!

For the diesel I'm pretty sure there isn't an 82°C Stat, I think that one is only in the petrol engines. I think there are two but only 88 and 92 I think.

If after 10 miles of driving the temperature isn't upto around the middle or just below then the thermostat is stuck open.
