Engine racing but wouldnt go into gear

Hello, Could anyone give me ideas of why my diesel 2ltr Montego saloon suddenly went out of gear while I was going round a roundabout but the engine was racing as we went down the road and smoke started coming from the back of the car. I pulled into the side and stopped with the handbrake as the whole car outside was engulfed in thick grey smoke from the back to the front. After leaving the car to settle for an hour I went back and stepped on the accelerator which moved the wire at the front of the engine. Hoping that it may start and get home I switched the engine on but smoke started straight away so I turned the engine off. I was kindly rescued with a tow by Rebbeca and Paul members of the club who recognised my car in Sittingbourne, Kent. Many thanks to them. Diane

you might find its the diff in the gearbox has exploded cracking the caseing and looseing all the gear oil(also hitting the exhaust which would cause the smoke)
