Don't everyone panic, its not mine that is for sale. Sorry RDGelder :)
But there is one on EBAY at the moment, if anyone is looking for an old classic maestro with digidash.

I would If I were you. If that other maestro is past it then you must strip out all the bits you can and scrap the shell.
then get the VP of ebay, why not ask if the seller will end auction early? it would pay you to ask so no one else gets in first if he would end it early.
It looks in really nice condition for its age and its local to you too
It needs to go to a caring home, shame for it to get wrecked after 20 years.

Steve you really can't say that, because I know two other people who want the VP. You know very well they did as they were the ones that showed it to you and said they were having it, or at least going to try and bid for it closer towards the end.
So as far as I am concerned its open bidding.
Plus it hasn't even met the reserve yet and as for keeping it outside thats scandalous.
How could you even think of letting a Y reg VP out into all elements of the weather, just standing there rotting and not doing anything for years on end. :(
But I do agree someone from the club should buy it, just so Mr b o ll ocks doesn't get it :)

I seem to remember you yourself saying that you shouldn't outbid someone you know on eBay when you put your bid on those headlight protectors.

True very true.
But there is a fundamental flaw in your argument their Steve, their is a subtle difference between the two cases.
The people concerned told you about the car first and said they would quite like it and were going to bid. IMO you have deliberately gone and stuck a bid on it before they had chance, when you knew they were going to. Thats not what you do to mates, you wait until they have made up their mind then bid. I mean there is 5days left on it so no rush.
The difference with those headlamp protectors is I saw them first and bid straightaway. You didn't tell me about them and I didn't deliberately bid on them meaning you couldn't have them.
Now seeing as you bid knowing one of your mates wanted it, I dont see how you can now tell them not to bid? Seems slightly unfair and not on to me.

Im sensing another 'MG Turbo' style argument about to kick off here.
Steve was quite within his rights to bid and then to ask people to ask him before bidding in case his bid would get pushed up without the other bidder winning. Note my use of the word 'ask', people can and I suspect will disregard his request. It is after all an auction and anyone can bid. Storing the car outside isnt going to ruin it, its probably been outside for the past 20 years.
It does deserve a caring home where it can be restored and cared for
I dont see why the two of you are arguing, If someone else is desperate for it they will just have top bid along with everyone else
BTW I hope no one is offended because that wasnt my intention.:)

Lol, nope not WW3 yet :D I know steve is in his rights to bid. But I was trying to point out that Steve intentionally bid on it, knowing his mate wanted to who had seen it first and pointed it out to him, which in my eyes is rather spiteful.
Now I do not believe Steve intended to be spiteful at all (well least i hope he didn't), as its not in his nature. But that is how it came across with the comment.

i think theres one thing everyone can agree on, and that is it must go to a member of the club. It would be a real shame for it to go to waste. when I win the double roll-over lottery tonight im going to buy a scrap yard and turn it into a home for abandoned maestros. most will be restored to near perfect and sold on when they are finished the very bad ones will be kept as a source of spares. my own private collection will be housed there too consisting of a completly restored example of each model. for montego fans there will also be a section of the yard devoted to the maestros larger brother.

Ok thanks for the clarification.
Its just I got the impression you were boasting about bidding on it and no-one else was to bid on it, so you could rub your mates noses in it who wanted it before you and were just waiting till later to bid. That isn't nice and I just wanted to point that out.
Now I know that wasn't what you were getting at. I hope the best man wins :)
Lets hope someone in the club does get it, and cares for it.

Hey, H48, that was my idea! Still, I suppose we could keep either end of the country covered! I have often seen on TV the "Boneyard" out in the US where the military keep all their de-commissioned aircraft and have often thought about something like that for cars. Of course I would need extra space for some imported Toyota MPV's as well!

steve, I wouldnt get too uptight about this one, there are plenty of good projects come on ebay like that red MG 1600 that sold for a hundred quid. its engine had a broken piston but it would have been a really good project for someone not wanting to run the car but do a complete restoration. you could have totaly rebuilt the engine in that. somthing i'd have taken on if i had got the space

Steve,
I suppose I was saying that if you have bags-eyed the car, then I'll of course, stand aside...
But there's lots of other people that wouldn't. I remember us trying to do this on my Austin-Rover forum (operate a gentlemans agreement), but it didn't work, and group memebers just got on and bidded against each other.
I think it's fair to say that whoever bids and buys this car will be an enthusiast - given its rather specialist nature :-)

Keith
P.S., I have a Maestro VP coming up as the first Car of the Month for 2004 on the Austin-Rover site... Nice things, aren't they?

hi keith
there was talk about people asking permision from a highest bidder to bid on the item they were bidding on if they were a forum member.
not everyone agreed to that, I didnt for reasons like this. It was bound to kick of arguments.
my advice: forget gentlemens agreements and bid, I do.
its always easy to make up these gentlemens agreements but when the boots on the other foot things tend to get messy.
one way to look at it is this: If the price stay low, Mr bollox might just slip in with a last minute bid and then win it. also if the auction isnt going well the seller may respond to an email offering to buy the car 'buy it now' style from a certain Mr. bollox

Im getting quite good at guessing prices maestros go for, for this one I think £300 but it is quite special so if enough enthusiasts want it it could go up.

Yeah EBAY can be traumatic when you really need something and you are reluctant to bid on it because a mate has.
I normally email them ask what they need it for, to see if my needs are greater then theirs and then see how it pans out that way.
Of course there is always the chance with ebay, that someone unknown to you pips you to the post at the last minute.
(Steve sorry for jumping down on you like a ton of bricks yesterday, it was just one of those days  )

I think that estimate is a little on the high side for a car with the dreaded tin rot. I reckon half that.

11th December 2003, 09:06
Yeah its not worth anywhere near that. I would say about half that as well if not less as you can't really tell the condition of it on those photos.

I think the trick with Ebay is keep your user ID secret and bid for whatever you want. If you win, you win. Simple.
One exception, if you dont mind who wins, be careful not to bid each other up making it unnecessarily expensive.
Dave.

Things can go up over what they're worth if enough people really want it. It looks in good condition so I see no reason why it shouldnt fetch £300 if sold away from ebay (could be the reserve). ebay isnt a brilliant place for selling cars, they dont often go for what they are worth but this one is a bit different so people might push the price up to its real value. If that makes sense
my car cost me £375 two years ago but if it had been on ebay it might have managed £100. as it was, it was worth what I paid for it. It came from the west midlands because I had my uncle looking out for a good one for me down there, 375 was a decent price and about average for a trouble free example. age doesnt matter when a car gets past 10 years old, its all about condition. a good H reg will sell for the same as a Y or D reg for example IMO.

Thats okay. :) What with owning 4 maestros  we've had plenty of practice guessing how much a maestro is worth. Maestros are always odd tho, as a M reg could cost just the same as a Y reg, it all depends on the condition of the bodywork.

No idea! :( Would be a shame if it went to someone who was going to trash it for 6mnths then send it to the scrapyard :( I was rather hoping someone from the club could get it, so geoffery (my Y reg VP) could have a friend :)

Yes Steve, you shouldn't do things like that. A guest or someone who hasn't read the board for a week will unfortunately not have a clue what has gone on. Also the whole thread now doesn't make sense :( A simple post to say you weren't getting the car would have sufficed.

That argument went something like this at my place:
Keith, "Can I get a Maestro"?
Sue, "No"
Keith, "Why?"
Sue, "Because they're :censored: "
Can't really reason with logic like that.
I mean... a late MG 2.0i has little wrong with it. She also refuses to be seen dead in a Maestro, but happily drives a Rover 800! Women, eh?

Like cothing: The Maestro is like your old comfy trainers, and the Rover 800 more like a pair of expensive high-heels - nice to look at... I know, your Rover 800 is a nice one, and I wouldn't mind one, but not if my Maestro would have to go on exchange - there has to be one reliable car :)

Keith,
Cruel dilemma...Maestro or partner.
Not that I’m biased, but here are 20 reasons why I would choose a Maestro:
(Note: some are a bit risque and suggestive; no offence intended)
1. Just as you're enjoying the ride, a Maestro will not tell you to get out because it wants to go to sleep
2. You don’t have to wine and dine a Maestro
3. A Maestro won’t complain you’re giving it too little attention.
4. A Maestro won’t get jealous if you test-drive someone else’s Maestro.
5. A Maestro never has a headache
6. If you’re not happy with your Maestro’s performance you can upgrade it
7. You can share your Maestro with like-minded enthusiasts
8. If you change your Maestro for a newer example with better bodywork, your old one won’t claim half your house
9. A Maestro does not come with in-laws.
10. A Maestro doesn’t care how much you earn.
11. If you go abroad with your mates on holiday, your Maestro won’t have a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp when you get back
12. A Maestro doesn’t care if you go to sleep right after you’ve been in it.
13. You can have more than one Maestro at once without having to lie
14. A Maestro will generally be out-of-action while it has a fluid-change for one day, once a year, instead of one week every 28 days
15. You don’t mind if your mates tell you they’ve been in your Maestro before you had it
16. A Maestro’s speakers have a volume-control. And an off-switch
17. A Maestro’s really big spare tyre is something to brag about
18. A Maestro won’t get an inferiority-complex if you feel its bodywork needs a bit of refurbishment
19. You can carelessly offload your baggage in a Maestro without worrying that it will claim Child Support in 9-months’ time
20. If it’s behaviour gets temperamental, you can give it to someone else to fix for you
