Hi,
I'm busy trying to source a 5-speed (VW) gearbox so that I can convert my 1988 1.3L from 4 to 5-speed.
I might have sourced a gearbox but without the gearstick assembly and associated linkages. I'm assumng that the gearstick assembly must be different i.e. it must be a self-centering stick?? Does anyone know if I'm right? Also does anyone know if the gear linkage set up differs (forward of the gearstick assembly)?
Thanks!

You don't need to do anything with the gearstick, apart from screw on a new knob with the new layout on. The movement of the gearstick is dictated by the linkages in the engine bay. If you use the 4spd linkages with the 5 spd box, gears will be 'missing' and those that are available will not be where you expect them to be!

I know you've said you've potentially sourced a 5-speed, but it may be worth pointing out that at present, the club has about 11 5-speed boxes from Ledbury cars - brand new - available to buy.
They're Ledbury / Bulgaria spec, which may mean a slightly different final drive ratio (can't remember offhand), but they are obviously in superb condition, being basically brand new. We also have linkage sets somewhere too. Certainly the linkages that bolt to the crossmember, and probably the linkages that bolt to the gearbox as well.

Hi Guys,
Thanks very much for the info, very helpful.
Wow, you have new gearboxes! Can I ask how much you want for one including, ideally, the linkages?
Many thanks,
Richard

Hi Chris,
You mentioned that the club has a stock of Ledbury gearboxes. Can you give me your number? I'd be keen to have a chat about these.
Thanks,
Richard
