I think it's time we had another run of the "How many cars do you own?" poll as quite a few of us seem to have acquired additional vehicles recently.
So go on, how many, and what? :)

We are currently the scourge of our estate, due to too many cars.....
2 x Honda CRX, both silver, one awaiting an insurance man due to altercation with tractor, the other awaiting major structural work!
1 x Escort TD Estate, the village bike - everyone seems to have a go!! (I, erm, had it last week!)
1 x Toyota MR2, mum's boyfriends little toy
1 x Peugeot 309 GE (the base model!), my daily driver
And last, but by no means least,
1 x MG Maestro 1600 R series, which currnetly has pride of place round the corner in the lock up, awaiting some good weather so I can properly do the bodywork, and a good set of twin webers!
Oh, and theres mum's courtesy car out the front too (a 51 reg fiesta), just to annoy the neighbours a bit more!!
And no, we are not those nuisance neighbours you read about!

Just the two seeing as you ask!
F153 JUE: made 1988/registered 1989 White Maestro VP (700 miles since engine/suspension replacement)
A335 BWV: 1983 Zircon blue Maestro VP (47,00 miles) currently untaxed and uninsured because I haven't had a chance to tweak the idle speed and sort the paperwork out.
You kept very quiet about that turbo, Maria! What's it like (colour/condition/originality)?

Oh, I thought you meant Monstro Mags! D'oh!
It's alright, I'll be awake in an hour!
Oh well, I reckon that our family have a sizeable fleet almost like Ricky's:
E-reg Maesty van - My street cruiser project
K-reg Toyota Liteace - For my parcel deliveries.
N-reg Toyota Estima - For my chauffering!
D-reg Volvo 340 - Dad's motor.
E-reg Peugeot 309 - Bro's motor.
Quite a few then!:D

Just the one for me, 1986 City X off the road at the moment for piston surgery. The wife has an Astra, she killed two Maestros in the last few years.
SimonR
4th December 2003, 09:20
To kill one Maestro may be regarded as a misfortune; to kill two looks like carelessness.
Oh dear :( How did she kill them? - more importantly is she also responsible for the piston problem as well?

I wish I'd added to that poll now:
0) I need a Maestro/Montego!
1) A Maestro/Montego is all I need.
2) It's good to have a spare.
3) Starting to worry...
4) Maybe I should knock holes through the ground floor walls and live upstairs?
5+) HELP ME!!!!
As for the turbo. Well, it's had a bit of muppeting, like inexpertly moving the battery to the boot, badly touching up bits of the roof, and fitting Rover 200 X-spokes instead of proper Maestro alloys, and sawing off the gearstick so you can no longer screw on a standard knob, it has some slightly scary bits of bodywork, but nothing terminal, the seats could do with replacing or at least recovering assuming I can find replacements, one bumper needs repair, the turbo oil seals have gone, but I have a spare ready to fit, the rest of the engine has been rebuilt and looks fabulous.
I didn't really want another car, but when someone emails you to say "Would you like a turbo for £200?", well.... :D
It's sitting in a lockup garage (only just fits) at the moment with the interior stripped out, ready for when I have some time and cash to give it the treatment it deserves.

4 Rovers?
In Singapore, Rovers before the 75 are seen as dead unreliable. (And they are, in a way). My aunt used to own a 416, and it always breaks down because of overheating and some electrical problems.
It has, like many other Rovers which are no more than 5 years old, been scrapped. Singapore government gives high rebates for scrapping cars.
The Rover brand name has been tarnished (by Honda) in Singapore. How's it in UK? I suppose people won't be too harsh towards their national product right?

Sadly no.... As a nation, us Brits tend to love bashing our motor industry, and whenever an element of it falls into foreign hands, or closes, they say, "That is terrible... such a shame".
Our media are incredibly anti-MG Rover and always has been since British Leyland was bailed out by our government in 1975.
All I can say is that I trust that the current crew get through their latest crisis and manage to turn some profits in the near future...
Once can only hope!
As for the perception of Honda and Austin-Rover, in the UK many people still regard these cars as the best we ever built. In fact, even today, you will still see adverts for 600s and 800s in the classifieds saying, "Honda engine".
Strange innit?

Keith

Current much-pruned fleet consists of only an '89 Maestro Turbo and a 98 Astra 1.4LS
But...since we bought our first Maestro in 1993 (a mint Y-reg HLS with 29k on the clock), we've owned three Maestro EFis, a Pug 505GTi saloon, an Austin Metro Mosaic, and an MG Metro 1300 (Mk1 B reg, bought in 2000 with only 16k on it)
Never owned a Monty; too big for our needs. That's why the Pug 505GTi had to go: too big. That and the fact it did 20mpg on a good day with a following wind.

My fleet is shrinking too - I've actually sold my Austin 1300 so I now have an empty garage. How long will that situation last?
Mrs. H would like to replace her Peu***t 206 for a Streetwise but that won't be until next year.

My Austin 1300 was a 2 door super deluxe, L reg in white, 49000 gen miles. I bought it 10 years ago and it was my summer classic motoring but after my son was born and I got the Maestro I lost interest in the 1300 and it had stayed in the garage for 4 years. The person I sold it to had the brakes serviced and then, would you believe it, it went straight through the MoT! The car was in generally good condition, rewired, recon Metro gearox and GT dash fitted by me.
Fond memories! :)
