View Full Version : Probs with Passenger Window (Electric Variety)

Hi, the passenger window on my 1983 VP Maestro does not work. It has not worked for the past three years, but as the driver's side works, it is something I have learned to live with.
However, my girlfriend (bless her) has informed me that she would like to be able to open this window, as the recent weather has been so hot:confused:
I am having trouble in finding where the fault lies (as I am a bit clueless about electrics)
I've had the door card off, and found that I can get the window up and down if I apply 12v to the motor. The known good switch which operates the driver's window does not work the on passenger side. I've taken the relays out of the speaker hole in the door, and tested them and they click away.
So I am at a loss now. I have a couple of wiring diagrams (attached) and a multimeter, but I can't really work out what I should be testing now, where it is, or how to do it!
Please help if you can!

First of all, i'd check all connections to see if they are corrosion free and clean. Seeing as you've got a multi-meter, I would then check continuity of all cables to see if there is a break in any of the cables. You've ruled out the motor and switch/relay, got to be a duff connection somewhere.

Try slamming the door when the switch is pressed in the up or down direction. If it works then, then the chances are it is a dirty or burnt contact on the motor (as it always stops in the same place at the bottom). If this happens then you can try cleaning it out, but sometimes a new motor is the only option.

The passenger window has twice the chance of not working compared to the driver's side. Both switches (the driver's side also has a passenger's switch) have to be connected and functioning for the window to work.
If you've a wiring problem on either side then it aint going to work.
Whenever I've had problems like this (and it's always the passenger side!) it was one of the swiches.

Of no help whatsover but amusing to recall was the fact that the passenger window on my previous maestro would never seem to work on wet days. The driver's window alaways worked on wet days but sometimes didn't on dry days.
Neither of them gave up altogether and sometimes both worked on the same day. I never did get to the bottom of the problem.

Ah! Did I not mention I'm clueless about electrics and wiring diagrams? :o
Last night I removed the wires form the passenger door and gave all the connections a good clean, then tested, (to the best of my ability) the continuity of those cables - all good.
Then today, after reading SimonR's post, I discover that both switches need to be connected  - I had borrowed one for the driver's side a while back
After replacing the borrowed switch, the passenger window goes up and down like a Frenchman's trousers!
However that window did not work when I got the car, so my cleaning must have done some good, i suppose
Thanks a lot for all your help everyone:)

Hah! You're not the first to be caught out like that ;-)
Glad it's working.
