View Full Version : R Series Clutch Cover?

I know i'm not exactly the brightest bulb in the box, but what exactly is a clutch cover? The only thing I can think of as being a clutch cover on an R series (I did the clutch not long ago) would be the thing that I would have otherwise referred to as the flywheel. Is this the clutch cover? It does cover the clutch, admittedly, but I thought it would be called a flywheel.....
I only ask this due to the fact that there is one going on ebay at the moment, and I do need a new flywheel (those teeth arent particulary good!)

Thanks

Ricky.

Maybe it's just the small piece of rubber which covers the clutch pedal

Ricky, the pressure plate that bolts to the crankshaft is sometimes refered to as the clutch cover. I know it sounds a misnomer in the case of the maestro vw, but on most conventional setups the pressure plate covers the clutch friction plate hence clutch cover.

cheers gary :)

Thanks gary, but that then puts a few more questions in my mind.....

1) When I bought my clutch kit, it came with the pressure plate, the friction plate and the release bearing, and this cost me £38 from the local motor factors. On ebay, SMC are saying the clutch cover has a retail value in excess of £90..... not the sort of money for a pressure plate, the sort of price for a flywheel though?

2) It says it is specifically for the R series MG, and the pressure plate surely wouldnt be any different?? The flywheel might, but I didnt notice any difference between the flywheel of the donor HLS and my MG, apart from the HLS had less cracks in it!!!!

You're right though, it isnt exactly logical!!

Ricky, could you not e mail the seller and ask him what it is he has?

I honestly cant say whether the mg pressure plate was different to the rest of the r series range but it is possible it could have had a higher clamping force to deal with the higher power output on the mg.

sorry cant be more specific. gary :(
