So, I am driving around now with the expansion tank cap undone.
The oil cunsumption has gone down. :) The heater matrix stoped leaking. But now the engine is running a little rough at idle speed. And, with winter comming, I think it is time to renew the headgasket.

So, I did some home work in the Haynes manual.
I did a few petrol engine headgasket renewals before, with succes.
But what is new to me is the technique mentioned of tighning the head stuts and bolts.

So, can anyone explain to me what is meant by: angle-tightning on page 1-30?
And the special tool mentioned is just an ordenary torque wrench? isn;t it?
It also says, one has to prevent angle-tightening more then once.

Is it just the studs that need this special treatment?

Something else: is it possible to renew just the head gasket? Leaving all the other ones in place? Like the inlet- outlet gasket?

Thanks!

Angle tightening is just that. You do them upto a specific torque, then tighten them by a certain angle, i.e. 90 degree etc. To do this properly you should have an angle gauge, but I've never used one and done it by eye as it is 90 degrees I think rather than something odd like 110 or 75 like on some other cars.

As a minimum you can just about get away with just changing the headgasket. You can leave the inlet and exhaust manifolds in place, (infact I'd recommend this). You might need to replace the exhaust to turbo gasket but as it is a copper one from new it is often re-usable with a glob of exhaust paste.

Ahh, OK.

It's a two step procedure then. Like tightening sparkplugs.

If the wheater is fine, I ll take it on this weekend.

Thank you!
