Our Great North Run this year is based around the North York Moors and the coast of North Yorkshire.

We will be meeting at the Obelisk on Oliver's Mount in Scarborough (the Obelisk is visible from the town) from around 9.30AM and leaving at 10AM. The run will be around 60 miles and include a stop for a pub lunch - the route details will be available on the day.

Camping has been arranged nearby (for the nights before and after) - but will be fairly limited, so please can people email or PM me to book a pitch. There is a hotel near the campsite if anyone fancies the usual creature comforts, please email or PM me for details of this also.

We look forward to seeing you on the day :) .

As its based around the North Yorks area, maybe some of you may fancy a trip to "The Barn" if going anywhere near wetherby?.

No-one else off the forum coming then? It's a giggle, really! And you get to see some wonderful country and meet interesting people and talk about - well yes, cars, but everything under the sun really! (Well we hope it'll be under the sun......)

I'll be there, but what I'll be driving is anyone's guess at the moment.

I'd also recommend this event, the roads and scenery are to die for.

Someone (Rich!) correct me if I'm wrong, but I think we've got the following so far...

Rich Smith + Helen
Rich Gelder
Me + Susie
Bobbi + Mike
Ben
Jon
Gary + family (Montego TD Auto!)
Geoffrey (Moonraker Monty Mayfair)

Have I missed anyone? Is Mr Slight joining us this year!?

Cheers Chris  , there's also Nige and Pam - and the Montego TD Auto Estate is a Perkins prototype which goes rather well :D .

If people want to camp, can they let us know below or email me as I'll have to book some extra places.

An idea of numbers to expect 'on the day' would be good too, to ensure there are enough route maps to go round.

I wasn't planning on going as far west as Wetherby to see Mal's barn, but it would be good to maybe pop in on the way to Scarborough or on the way back.

And what's wrong with Guildford -> Plymouth -> Merthyr Tydfil -> Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch -> Stranraer -> Berwick -> Scarborough?

Which almost raises a challenge... How long would it take a Maestro to travel all around the coast of Britian?

Hope the weather improves - it's a long way to come from Dorset just to get rained on, we can get wet down here!

Everybody welcome, and hopefully the weather forecast* will encourage people - at its worst it can't be as wet as Betws-y-Coed was last year  !

*the online forecast I use, on 'Metcheck', was better when I saw it last night than it is now... :o

You must be joking! That wasn't wet, it was merely damp! We're coming anyway, if the weather gets too bad we'll find a B&B but we're not going to miss out on the trip, really looking forward to it! But we are bringing the big tent again so we've got somewhere comfortable to sit when it's raining!

Last weather report I saw was for really heavy rain Saturday, clearing up a fair bit for Sunday.

If I'm camping and the rain gets bad I can always use the Monty for sleeping in. It works pretty well - wind the front passenger seat down about three quarters, get the sleeping bag out: really comfy.

I did this two nights running on the way back from Staples2Naples 2005 in a Montego, in service areas in Italy and France. With no sleeping bag but a couple of blankets, I slept pretty well on the folded-down passenger seat  .

I am currently in Tetbury for at least the next few days/poss week.

Three days and 1227 miles later, I'm back. What a great weekend!

I didn't take any photos. The latest craze seems to be making videos of everything and uploading them to YouTube (which then strips them of all their quality), so I thought I'd join the bandwagon...

Not having the Maestro was a bit of a downer, it would've been lots of fun on the road back to Pickering :D

Great video, Jonathan!

Some great sights there and a nice mix of cars and scenery. The music works well, too - almost as nice as that V6 ;) - what a climb at the end!

Jonathan
25th August 2007, 10:56
That climb was leisurely compared to the Honister Pass in the Lake District (GNR 2004), which I drove on the way back on Monday.

The video was made using a Panasonic Mini DV camcorder given to me on my 21st Birthday (which tells how old it is) and edited with the standard Windows Movie Maker that comes with Vista. As a total novice I'm quite pleased with it, but I was slightly disappointed with all the detail that was lost when uploaded to YouTube and converted to a flash file.

We got home this afternoon about 3 after staying on a few days, had a great time in spite of the weather - which turned absolutely wonderful on Friday so that we baked in the car all the way to Solihull where we were staying with friends, and today all the way home as well!

948 miles total and we've had lots of fun, saw more locos in steam and working at the same time and same place, than I've ever seen before (at Grosmont at the top end of the North York Moors Railway), really enjoyed the York Air museum, put lots of 10p's in the machines on the seafront at Filey, discovered that whatever the weather at the campsite (mostly cloudy and damp) it's always nice at Pickering!

Came home via the Humber Bridge, got hopelessly lost in Nuneaton, but found lots of lovely B roads with very little traffic. A great week's holiday, many thanks to Rich for organising the weekend without which we might never have made the effort to go to Yorkshire. Thoroughly recommended and we'd love to go back someday!

A Grand Day Out even if the mist stopped us from getting a good view of the heather. Thanks for the organisation.

You say it as though you're old! When I was 21, some new video cameras still used full-sized VHS tapes, with a core of enthusiasts still refusing to move from 8mm cine...

Good video btw. :)

Thank you to all who attended, and for making it all such fun despite the atrocious weather :) . I'm glad everyone enjoyed it.

Next year, it looks like we will be visiting Derbyshire (which is where our Great North Runs started back in 2003).
