View Full Version : Fuel ECU doesn't fit!

One problem I'm yet to resolve with my new engine project is the replacement of the fuel ECU (on glovebox roof).
I bought a secondhand unleaded unit from Montego and Maestro Parts in Brum but when I went to fit it the plugs were not the same.
My current Leaded ECU has a long edge connector that fits along almost the whole of one side whereas the new unleaded unit is designed for a square connector, a bit like a multiplug.
I'm wondering whether this is because I got a Monty ECU from Brum - or were there different Maesty looms with different plugs...?

Aha! The plot thickens...What you have there is what we commonly refer to as a "Throwback" !! Earlier models had this wide edge connector but this spec was changed for 88MY. I've seen E reg models like this but never F reg models. I'd suggest a simple wiring graft, colour for colour, changing your edge connector to a later one from the scrapyard. Solder in the new wires using heat shrink tubing to insulate as req'd. That should do the trick.

Hi there. the fuel ecu in the glove box does not need to be changed for an unleaded conversion. Only the ignition ecu under bonnet.
Am i right thinking you have 1.6 vp?

Thanks for the answers guys.
The car in question is a 1989 F Maestro VP (although I believe it was made from a parts bin in sometime late 1988).
Ah, I have an unleaded ignition ECU as well but when I plug it in I don't get a spark... D'oh must be defective.
I was wondering if the fuel ECU was responsible for the really bad starting I've experienced for a while (also with old engine) It seems to start OK and then the revs drop and it stalls. This happens for about 3 of 4 times until it's happy to run. Odd. This is probably the carb tho and something to do with the auto choke.

Hi that sounds like possibly the orfco valve sticking open. remove the three screws and remove valve, if you can suck air through the small hole in the valve body (top of valve when wiring connections are downmost) casting, then you need to take valve apart free off solenoid and make sure when it is put back together the top hole is sealed. then my best advice is tape up the wires and leave them disconnected.
cheers gary :)
