Honestly, I never can understand their parts shop. For months they have been telling me that Oporto Red paint is NLA and when I asked on the off-chance on Saturday, they said they might have some. I just rang them to confirm and they said that not only could they now get cans of paint, they could get touch up pens as well! Unbelievable. I have ordered two of each to be on the safe side - never know when they'll change their minds again.

Ooooh thats a good thing to know for people that have Opporto Red cars. To be honest I never knew it was NLA anyway but then I wouldn't I have a white car :)

Wouldn't 'alf*rds do this colour in their aerosol tin range?

Halfords do indeed stock Oporto Red - as well as other old Rover colours. I know my local Halfords has a range of Rover Beige's and Orange's also. (not sure if my town has above average Allegro ownership or not!)

Our Halfrauds don't stock Oporto Red, but a local spare shop does...
I've not seen an Allegro for years to be honest.... :banghead:

What's the general view on Halfrauds aerosol paint? I wasn't very impressed with it when I sprayed parts of my old 'Stro with it because their flame red was a different colour to my car and also the finish was inferior compared to the Rover paint I was also using.
The colour difference was not due to fading because the Rover paint was the correct colour.
I'm going to need to do a little respray work on my other Maesty and wondered if Halrauds' Zircon blue was any good....?

I have used Halfords Zircon Blue on my model MG Maestro - and it looks quite good. Perhaps more silver than blue - but this may be because i have sprayed it in such a small area.
I think they are still doing their buy 2 get one free offer at the moment on Paints and Primer.
You wont know unless you try them...

I've used 'Olf'd's spray paint to good effect before and it is good in my oppinion. Remember that your car's paint may have faded. Opporto red is one of those colours that do.

My experience with halford paint has been good and bad.
I've had nothing but excellent results with blues - but Targa Red - don't use - it turns an horrible orange colour!!!!!
Both an Previous Owner and myself tried it, and it went orange in both cases.

Hi,
(Don't tell anyone but i used to work at Halfrauds)
The larger "Arcade or Superstores" stock a paint mixing machine. Which means that they can mix almost any colour. You can either have a touch up or they can "place" it in an aerosol. So if its not on the shelf they can usually do it.
All you need is the paint code. I have mixed up loads of Rover/Austin/BLMC/BMC etc colours even old ones going back to the 60's. (just dont let the "saturday" staff do it!!)

I wouldn't trust paint mixes like that. Before Bicester had a branch of Halfwits, there was another motoring centre in the same place and I went there to get some touch-up paint for one of my 'yotas.
Two goes and they still couldn't get it right! Little wonder they closed down soon afterwards!

Its all down to the person doing the job. Thats why i said avoid the "Saturday" staff. Most of Hal****s have young kids who aren't interested in what they are doing there, just there few £ that they pick up. The paint mixing scheme was very good and had different shades of the same colours listed /available.
Its the same as most places, if you find someone who holds an interest in vehicles- then you will probably get better service than from some yts who is only there because he has to be.

Zircon Blue Halfords spray does not quite match the rest of my MG1600 but it's not bad. You need to get several coats of lacquer applied really evenly to get it right.
Rich - Zircon Blue is like a silvery colour but the Halfords olour is a little too grey. I was thinking of painting my Corgi Maestro that colour to match teh full size car. How did you go about it - did you strip all the old (yellow?) paint off it first? Did you use lacquer?
Reds are a problem on lots of cars - Vauxhalls and VWs are the worst - they turn white. My Turbo was orange when I bought it and had been touched up with Targa in parts and then blended in on the roof! Then I put a 2nd hand wing on the car and that was from a low mileage car that must have been in a garage most of it's life because the colour was much closer to the original. I got fed up with it and had the whole car resprayed in the end!

How much does the paint and pens cost?

Well Dan went down to Rover to purchase some pens and tins today.
They have charged him £5 for one pen and tins are £8 each. Apparently the man smirked and laughed at Dan, when he explained what he wanted the colour for.
*Tsk* Rover Dealers
If your above post was correct and you did get two cans and a pen for under a fiver, perhaps you could get us some too. :)

I need to go to Rover next week so I can ring them up and order you some paint if you are serious about wanting it. May take a while in the Christmas post though!

Yes I am serious about getting some paint, if you can get it cheaper than we can please. There is no particular rush for it, i won't be doing anything to the car for along while yet. Just making sure I have the paint for when its needed.
I can post a cheque to you if you want.
I will double check with Dan later on how many pens and tins we need. There isn't alot to cover once the rust is sorted. As you have probably seen on the pictures that are on the web.
Cheers

Okay I have spoken to Dan and if you could please possibly get us some paint I would be very grateful :) No idea why the rover garage wants to charge more up here :(
If you could get as much for a tenner, geoffery would be very pleased :)
Let me know and I can post a cheque to you.
Cheers
Lindz.

Yes please our Rover dealer has told me it is NLA. And was most unhelpful when I asked for an alternative source as usual.
Thanks muchly
