Hey up then

Would you knowledgeable folk out there know if it is my brake servo or hose that would cause my intermittent problem with my brakes?

brake pedal is very stiff when the car has been stood overnight, when you first try and use the brakes (with engine running), the brake pedal feels like it don't want to move! , after a while (car warmed up), it operates normally!

If I go to the car after it has stood overnight and i press brake without starting the car ( ie therefore no servo running) , the brake pedal travels normally!
Is this conclusive that I need a servo?
I can't hear any hissing if the servo pipe may be leaking.
look forward to your replies
thanks

If this is an early R series car then it can almost be regarded as normal. I've seen a few that do this. I think it is due to a slightly sticky one way valve in the line from the inlet manifold to the brake servo.

When you first get into the car you'll have power assistance for the brakes for the first couple of presses of the pedal then it'll go hard. Then if you rev the engine hard or wait for it to warm up a bit you'll find the brake assistance returns again. Is this what it is doing?

Oops I just realised that this is my old car!

It has always done it, particularly when stood for a while. I suspected a slightly sticking one way valve. Usually one good rev of the engine was enough to unstick the valve and return the brake assistance. If it is getting worse then perhaps you could fit a new one (you have to get the pipe hot to remove and refit the valve as it is quite a hard plastic tube).

It is indeed the one way valve at fault, I have had no luck in locating this part (obsolete) as yet.
If anyone has one or knows where to get one from please let me know
thanks

They are common to most cars, so I'd check round in a scrap yard for a similar one from a newer rover as I'm betting they didn't change them! The hardest part will be fitting it as the hose needs to be heated up to make it pliable otherwise it can shatter.
