I have just taken delivery of a combined light/left hand indicator switch on which the light switch is on the indicator stalk and which has come off a 1991 Maestro, I am hoping to fit it to my 1984 Maestro which has the light switch separate from the indicator stalk, before I dismantle things I am wondering if the wiring and connectors will be the same?

Cheers

The short answer is no, I don't think they will be. The indicator stalk is very different and the wiring is very different too. I'm not even sure if the stalk will fit onto column.

Why are you trying to retrofit the later stalk to it? Is it because the original light switch is broken? If so I drew up a modification a few years ago to retrofit relays to the light switch (the large current flowing through it is the reason it keeps burning out).

Yes, I damaged the switch, it is not burnt out, I simply twisted it and it is now intermitent on side lights. Switch simply feels slightly "loose".

The same switch is used on the metros too so perhaps you could rob one from one. Alternatively I managed to get a new one a couple of years ago from a car show as I knew they were a weak point.

As a last resort you can disassemble the switch and clean the contacts up and reposition them (sometimes they melt and come loose in the switch housing).

I'm on my third of these switches in about six months.

How would I go about retro-fitting a relay? I have a very, very limited knowledge of electrics. Is it difficult to do?

Are you running higher than normal wattage headlamp bulbs, as this can cause them to melt rather quickly. I'd have to work out again how to set up the relays as it is a long time since I drew up a diagram and it is now long lost. If someone can give me the wire colours going to the switch then that would help.

The wires going to my switch are all black!

Only joking :)

Hope this picture helps, 2 blue and 1 red, with the 2 brown below - if that makes any sense.
I'm not sure what wattage the bulbs are, I've haven't had to change them so I've left them alone, I'll check on them a bit later

Switch problems was finally solved by tapping in "Lucas Light Switch" which bought me up a source for a brand new almost identical which as now been fitted and appears to have sorted the problem, examination of the old switch showed that problem had been caused when I twisted it .... seems that switch I got was intended for either MBG or Midget.
