Okay, now I might be a bit thick here...

Since sorting out the wiring problem the car runs fine, but, the stereo doesn't work.
Also, the temperature gauge doesn't work. I've checked the connections and the fault is not obvious.

The stereo came with -C- so I assumed it wanted the code, which i do not know, so i have swapped it, but although the new unit (tape) would whirr, nothing appeared on the display and no lovely noises came out of the speakers.
I fitted a CD player instead, which would accept and eject CDs, but showed no display and played no music.

I checked the fuse box - aha! - fuse gone. I swapped it for the spare which went "fizz!" as i inserted it.

Does this mean I am thick and should disconnect the battery before fitting a new fuse? Or is too much current going through the circuit since the re-wire which blows the fuses?

It's a puzzle! I hate elctrical faults.

It seems like there is a fault on that circuit. Check for short circuits where any wires might be damaged or accidentally touching the chassis.

Could also mean you've connected it incorrectly. When you fitted the different stereo, did you cut off the old multiplug and join up a new wiring harness? If so, check with a multimeter that you've got it right.

Also, which fuse is it that's going? Is it the permanent +12V or the switched one? Sounds from your description that it's the switched supply that's failing because the CD mechanism works off the permanent supply when the ignition is off.

Don't worry - this one sounds fairly easy to fix...
