May as well chuck a new shaft on.
For a few quid more could save alot of hassle in the future , if the Bottom Ball Joint Pops out ok.
Loads of work going on to keep her running. just the time to do it :(

Just as you like, the inner joint is not particularly unreliable as long as it does not lose all its lubricant it will more than likely last as long as the car.
You should not have too much trouble with the bottom ball joint if you choose to remove it. You can remove the drive shaft without disconnecting the bottom ball joint, just take out the two lower strut bolts.

Inner CV boot is replacable. Just undo the inner CV bolts and knock the CV joint off of the shaft and then replace. Either that or drop the inner CV joint off of the gearbox and undo the hub nut and the whole shaft will slide out without removing anything else.
A good motorfactor will have vacuum tube on a roll to cut the length you require off.
Wheel nuts (new ones) can often be found on e-bay. They are the same as the ones used on the 200/400s so they are pretty common.
