E-T-V…Well Dan following your advice on the pressurising of the water hoses I bit the bullet and had the head gasket done.
Two lads who were mechanics and worked from home did it for me. After listening to the engine they asked why I thought the gasket had gone as it sounds as sweet as a nut. I explained this was forum advice and they said Ok and I left it with them.
Next day they rang and said the downpipe from the manifold was cracked and whether to change it as it cost £41.00 + vat and would have to be ordered.
I agreed of course and they fitted it when received.
They found the gasket in a very bad state indeed and showed it to me. The steel ring around the cylinder bore had turned up and left a gap to the waterway. The downpipe which was the original had nearly cracked all the way round and would have shortly broken completely.
The pressurising has now gone completely and was obviously the fault.
Thanks for your good advice Dan.
The only thing I note is that the car sounds different to before but can’t put my finger on where the noise actually is, but can perhaps be described as being more raucous.
It could perhaps be the new exhaust piece or the old one having been upset .
Anyway the engine is running very well and the water hoses are soft again in a very short time so a good result.
