View Full Version : Van sill skins

Having hunted for a cheap(ish) pair of van sills as oppose to car sills, I am re-considering their fitment.

The replacements have an overlap join to mimmick the van body rear panel attachment to the front end just behind the doors.

Have any fellow van drivers compared van against saloon sills? The join appears to be a weakness as water can get inbetween the panels with the usual results. The original ones have been plated over this joint.

I am considering moving away from originality to functionality and using car sills.

Any thoughts anybody?

I joddled/welded repair sections to both rear sides for the time being.

Van sills don't often go rusty. I replaced the rear half of mine a couple of years ago at about 190k miles and the other one wants doing now at 230k. They usually go at the rear where they meet the wheelarch rather than just under the join. The joins are usually only visable on replacement skins so perhaps it has had some skins in the past which weren't fitted well?

I'd cut the old ones off and then weld some skin sills back in. (Van ones were available last time I enquired). Then seam weld the "joint" in the sill to prevent water getting in there in the future.
