Hi, I have a G reg maestro and when i start it up the temperature gauge on the dashboard moves to the maximum. after a period it moves back down to about the midpoint.
Any ideas what may be causing this??
Thanks

do you mean it moves before the engine has started?
or it moves across after a couple of miles ?
what model car have you got?

I have a 1.3, when I start the engine the gauge moves from the low temperature to the high temperature (maximum) within twenty seconds before even moving off... the temperature guage level then reduces after a period of time down towards the middle.

Hi thats fairly unusual for a later Maestro with a manual choke, more typical with the early cars.
I think the problem will be due to a faulty temperature sender unit in the cylinder head, thats the first thing I would look at.

I agree on checking the sender unit. Does it have a manual choke? If not then the ECU can be at fault too (quite common it seems).
